Hadn't seen them in a few years and you expected them to be familiar with your financial situation? I feel like you're leaving something out.
He was a previous coworker in a pretty niche industry we are both in. He was previously aware of the situation due to the small industry and told us ahead of time don’t worry about bringing anything. We still brought an inexpensive bottle of wine as a courtesy. I honestly thought going in it was a “good luck on the move” and pick me up type situation since we were going through a rough patch at the time. We were obviously way off base, I felt like we were being preyed on for the shittiness that was going on.

I have a "friend" who did multiple MLMs and now started a t-shirt company "for charity" where you have to join a private Facebook group for the privilege of buying shirts that are not original designs and cost more than double as the same crap all over the internet and the promise that the profits go to help others.

Haven’t talked since. It sounds petty but I felt borderline betrayed and couldn’t believe a “friend” would try to make a buck on us knowing we were in a tough spot.
First off what he did is beyond crappy, and I'm sorry to hear that.....but imagine what a shitty state they are in. You just know they are way in over their heads with whatever racket this is and this was one of many desperation moves.
Penn and teller do a show called bullshite about various topics and one was on MLM, and it was so fricking depressing. These people are absolutely drowning and just wreak of desperation to find a way out.
By far the most pathetic was one that was "man themed". This poor schmuck got conned into buying all this product geared toward dudes and told he would sell it like crazy. Just had to host parties. So he has to buy all the meat and all the beer for these parties and as you can imagine no dude at a cook out wants to buy his shite.

When that fricking Advocare crap fired up I had to start ignoring some texts and calls.

I would kind of get it if it replaced stuff you were buying anyway with comparable product at comparable cost.
15 years ago maybe Pampered Chef or something was in that bucket.
But now the stuff my wife gets pitched is inferior quality and far more hassle to get than the equivalent elsewhere (like shipping costs). Needless to say the products aren't the point, which is where it all breaks down.
But when it comes to friends pitching friends on the items, it's basically "buy poor quality stuff from me with no benefit to you whatsoever because we're friends and I care more about leveraging you than our friendship!"

I have multiple acquaintances on FB selling Rodan & Fields, Beachbody (none of them have beach bodies), some leggings company, and a couple random makeup companies. They are all trying to add me to their Facebook groups & send private messages. I don’t even open FB messages from people who aren’t in regular contact. It’s always a sales pitch. Annoying AF.

Friend of mines wife asked me to call her last week, so I did. Turns out she wants me to get in on her MLM and I've made up an excuse to join the first two times, now I just ignore her texts. Hate to be that way but I mean come the frick on.
