Cherokee is simply a word describing a tribe of people. How is using it demeaning?

You're correct- Tanto is a Japanese short sword apparently whereas TONto was the fictional Native American (either Comanche or Potawatomi) character & companion of the Lone Ranger to whom I was referring. So I earned my stupid.

And I never said or implied that the use of Cherokee was demeaning.

Owning a Grand Cherokee on the other hand is another matter.

Until the tribes who were enslaved by the Cherokee decide that the word Cherokee is a symbol of injustice. I wonder when the tribes who were slaughtered by the Comanche and Apache will declare these names to be offensive to them.

I agree. You want your mascot to represent strength. Native Americans were never able to build anything more than nomadic tribes and were steamrolled by whites. The should rename all indian mascots to the conquistadors or colonizers. White Europeans were able to conquer an entire civilization with a few hundred men. How embarrassing.
