Technology at home - do you trust it?

My wife whispered to me the other day, "What do you want for dinner?". I said, "Chicken. And why are you whispering?". She said, "I think there are people listening to us." I replied, "That's crazy. Nobody is listening to us! I mean, why would anybody want to listen to us?" I laughed. My wife laughed. Alexa laughed...

Yeah, discuss something totally off the wall that you have not searched for ever with someone with nothing but your cell phone around... Like diabetic shoes...
Then see what kind of pop up ads you start seeing on sites...
No one is listening though...

What are you laughing about Dave?

I fully believe that they are actively recording everything we say. But if they want to hold one to me talking about the most mundane things in life and yelling at the cats to get off the counter, then that doesn't bother me. We don't have any devices in our bedrooms or my office. At least devices I know can listen. I'm sure they hear everything in the house.

Trust nothing and you will rarely be disappointed

I'm fairly confident that the Nest thermostat that was in the house when I bought it wants to kill me.

As cool as Alexa and other voice apps are, we don't have it because of principle, not that we do anything that isn't boring.
Phones are the only thing I am aware of that are listening in my home.... and I am tempted to go back to rotary.

My wife and I were driving down the road talking about replacing an appliance. She pulled up her phone to look at something. Both Google and Facebook on her phone were displaying popup ads for appliances. This has happened numerous times.

A nest ad just appeared on the right side of my screen. I'm not kidding.

Once upon a time - actually twice upon a time - I selected a free Alexa and a free Google whatever-it's-called.
I hooked it up cuz I thought it might be a decent extra bluetooth speaker. Speaker sucked. Alexa doesn't understand East Texan well enough to play my music on command, so they're both sitting on a shelf, disconnected. Sounds quality was shite.

I laughed. My wife laughed. Alexa laughed...
Now she constantly interrupts when I am watching Star Trek.

lol, I was about to edit that, but got distracted. The funny thing is that I had the edit up, got distracted before making the change, then when I came back I wondered why I had the post up and didn't remember if I had already posted it.

No.
I understand that I've actually purchased a homing device that I keep in my pocket, and that it can hear what I say and see what I'm doing...I get it.
But I refuse to add devices like Alexa or any of those things which need to "listen" in order to even work and constantly have access to the internet.
Sad thing is that I grew up waiting for The Jetsons to actually happen. Now that we're approaching that, the fact that everything is linked to the internet in order to have a "smart house" makes me want to ensure my house is a fricking dullard.

I - momentarily - was slightly annoyed during the deep freeze here in Texas that I couldn't order pizza online because their site was down and had to - *gasp* - pick up the phone to order delivery.
I quickly came to my senses lol.

People used to say they could watch through the TV set. Good times of conspiracies.
