I won’t spoil it but a relatively early quest solves this problem for you. Once you get used to the town portal system it is like second nature.

i spent all of act 1 building up my secondary attack and bitching about my primary with my sorceress and how it sucks to hit enemies with a stick (wand).
i didn't even think that i could change/upgrade my primary. i've been drinking mana like it's gatorade. half my inventory is mana/health potions.
