LSU Basketball's Failures in the SEC Tournament

LSU hasn't won since an SEC Tournament since 1980.
Probably the weirdest drought in the entire athletic department considering how many times they've won the regular season title since 1980, as well as the success in the NCAAT since then.
It's also very strange that since that 1980 Championship, they've only been to the championship game once, and that was Jamie Brandon and Co in 1993.
They've only been to the semifinals a handful of times since that run to the title game in 1993:
2000
2002 (I think it was 2002. Brady coached his arse off).
2003
2006
2009
2016 (Got blown out by A&M)
We made it to the Sweet 16 in 2019, but couldn't even make it to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament that year.
Can anyone else explain why LSU has played so terrible in this tournament?
For those who say, "One word. Kentucky," several other teams have won the tournament since 1980 not named Kentucky, and LSU hasn't been eliminated by Kentucky (going back to '80) other than in 1993's Championship, I believe.
Maybe there's an explanation to this weird quirk of losing that I'm unaware of.

They eliminated us a couple years back when the SECT was in the Smoothie King Center.
I can’t even remember the last time we won two games in the same SECT

Not really, I know Dale when he had a bid locked up would de-emphasize the SEC tournament thinking it better to rest up for the NCAA...a notion I never agreed with.
But after Dale we've had some good teams that never sniffed the Finals. It's baffling to me too.

I don't know if there is any real rhyme or reason as to why they have struggled. However, 2 years ago was the first time this century LSU entered as the reg season champ and failed to reach the Semi-finals.
Perhaps it is just a reflection of how inconsistent LSU basketball has been over the last 30 years. You forgot to include 2005 in your list, but otherwise all the years in that list (aside from 2019) correlate with LSU's better teams in the 2000's. For whatever reason they just haven't been able to get over the semi-final hump. In the other years where they didn't even make the semis those teams just weren't very good.
Still, I think many COMPLETELY overrate the importance of the SECT. Sure it would be fun to see them win it once in a while, but as long as they are in the NCAAT I don't really care if LSU ever wins another SECT.

That is always bothered me that the Tigers have failed to make noise in the tourney... No matter what sport ... It's always the first objective to win your conference

2002 and 2003...So almost 20 years ago. Maybe one day we'll find another Antonio Hudson

They won the conference in 1991, 2000, 2006, 2009, 2019. The SECT doesn't determine who "wins the conference". It just determines who wins the SECT.
I'd MUCH prefer an LSU team that is good enough to be the best in the SEC over a period of 18 games vs. a team who happened to play well for 2-3 nights.

I thought we made the SECT finals in 1987. Likely needed that run to get in the tournament, and made it as a 10 seed to go on a tear making it to the Elite 8 before the refs wimped out and cowered from Bobby Knight keeping us out of the Final Four in the Superdome.

Haven’t been watching much baseball?

It was 2005. We had UK down 5 or 6 points in OT, but lost.

I thought last year's team was poised to finally make a little noise in the SECT.
Which made it's cancelling all the more disappointing.

They need Paul Mainieri to coach them during the SEC Tournament

Andre will be our Antonio

The SEC Tournament is irrelevant unless you do not already have an NCAA bid assured. The official SEC Championship is awarded for the regular season performance unlike in the ACC.

Dale Brown never used to hide the fact that he didn't take the SEC Tournament very seriously. He wanted to concentrate his energies on the big tournament that started the following week. Brady used to have the same attitude. We only won it once with Dwayne "The Astronaut" Scales being the MVP.

While nice to win, SECT means nothing. Once NCAA tourney starts, nobody cares.

Id guess its just a coincidence, but maybe a depth thing. We never seem to have much

The company I worked for had 2 season tickets back then , and the only ones interested were the boss & me . We didnt miss more than 1 or 2 home games for probably 5 years. They had tremendous athletes during this period & were great games to watch.

I agree L SUs coaches have never emphasized winning the SEC tournament. LSUs performance there yearly has been abysmal. LSU winning there can get a better seed in the NCAA tournament. Keep winning.
