If you’re an amateur griller and were thinking about a pellet grill...

Do it. Obviously I’m not speaking to the experienced guys with “real” smokers and whatnot - do your thing. But if you’re just a casual griller...
I’ve just had regular grills in the past and would just occasionally toss a few burgers on, maybe a few pork chops, the usual. Recently moved to “the country” and decided to get a pellet grill since we’d be doing more stuff outside here and I’d be grilling more often (especially after reading about them here). Bought a RT-340 based on the recteq love shown around here.
I’m amazed at how easy it is and how amazing everything tastes.Got it right before Thanksgiving and threw a couple turkey breasts on it. Just made a simple rub from the recteq recipes, and I couldn’t believe how amazing it was since I’m not normally a big turkey fan. Incredibly tender, juicy, and flavorful. Same with pork loins - my mom and my father-in- law cook pork loins frequently, and they are generally bland and dry. The first one I did on the pellet grill was unreal. Used a recipe with a brine, rub, and injection, but forgot to inject it. It was still so so amazing - I couldn’t believe it was the same cut I’ve eaten all those years. Today I did a pork shoulder for pulled pork. 14 hours of smoking and I just started the “pulling” and can’t stop eating it as I pull.
I’ve also done steaks, burgers, redfish...literally every thing I’ve cooked on the pellet grill is the best that dish has ever tasted. This is life changing.
So if you’ve been on the fence about grabbing a pellet grill, by all means do it. And thanks to the board for the recteq recommendations, the recipes, the tips and tricks, etc.

I agree pellet grills are nice and easy yet the stuff I cook on mine taste great.

The 340 is a tiny beast. The only issue I've had was at Thanksgiving I quartered a 17 lb turkey and put it on, it cooked just fine but when I went to take it off it started a raging grease fire. The turkey was excellent but I burned the s*!t outta my hand lol. My fault. Next time I'll do two batches.

Really want to get a RT. Trying to decide between the 340 and the 590. I like the portability of the 340 and will prob be enough cooking space 90% of the time. However, the bigger capacity of 590 might come in handy for larger gatherings. The 590 says it can fit 5 racks of ribs, multiple chickens.. How does the 340 compare size wise?

It will fit 3 racks of St. Louis ribs using a rib rack, two whole spatchcock chickens, two pork butts, one whole packer brisket, etc. I bought a narrow rack that sits up and it can hold 10 lbs chicken wings or leg quarters that way. The 340 folds up and one person can lift it into the back of a pickup if that matters.

I have a Camp Chef and I love it. I do still use my Weber kettle to grill food though. I enjoy cooking on charcoal.
They have a Weber pellet grill in Houma for sale on FB market place if anyone is looking.

If you want to learn how to cook, this is the way to go. Very flexible, but not "set it and forget it". If you enjoy the process of cooking, you will enjoy a charcoal grill.

Have a Traeger myself, life changing .

You’ll never truly learn the art of smoking with a pellet oven, but to each his own.
If you want to be next level, then learn to do what the great smokehouses do...use burning wood as your “heating element.”

I have a kettle and a stick burner but haven't touched either since buying the rectec. It really is that good.

I guess a lot of guys have never cooked in an oven on a pan with a rack in it.
I have a pellet grill and have cooked a Turkey, some chickens, some hamburgers and none were better than having been cooked in the oven in a pan with a rack.
Grilling is far better over direct heat whether charcoal or gas. Smoking is best in a smoker. Steaks and hamburgers are better in an iron skillet if a direct heat grill is not available than on a pellet grill IMHO.
Pellet grills are ovens.
Gimmicks just like the air fryer my wife just bought.

I was disappointed in the amount of smoke mine imparted into the meat until I bought a smoke tube. I just did two pork butts, 4 lbs of sausage, 10 lbs of chicken and a large pan of mac and cheese in my vertical pellet smoker. I could not have cooked all that in my oven in a single day. The A-MAZE-N smoke tube made a difference in the meat, though.

bullshite. You’re not getting that smoky taste in an oven. I don’t know how much variance there is with different brands, but on my little recteq - even on something like a steak that doesn’t take long - you aren’t getting that smokiness from an oven. On things like the turkey breast, pork loin, brisket...if it were any more smoky it would be too much.
What brand is your pellet grill? My father-in-law just bought a Zgrill and was disappointed in the lack of smokiness. I told him to spend a couple hundred more for the recteq, but he is too thrifty despite being able to afford it.
I think you meant to say:

doesn't matter what those two fools say. I don't even like a ton of smoke, especially in poultry.

Trying to decide between the 340 and the 590
Unless you’re going to tote it around, get the 590. I was on the fence and got the 340 because of the UPS delivery. The 590 is delivered freight and I have a long, curvy gravel driveway. After I got mine, I’ve had an 18-wheeler dump truck down my driveway several times, so a freightliner could have made it through. So in hindsight I’d have bought the 590. The 340 will take care of my needs 95% of the time, but the extra space wouldn’t hurt. Still love my 340 and it will handle a 15 lb. brisket.
ETA: Looks like they don’t offer the 340 via UPS any longer because too many were damaged during shipping. But to meet the minimum weight for freight, they have to include pellets. So the gril/pellet bundle is $779.00 instead of $599.00 for just the grill like I paid. Definitely worth just paying $120 more for the 590 if it has to be delivered by freight anyway. Mine actually did have a little damage on deilvery via UPS - the tray that fits between the legs was bent up in a couple spots. I know they would have replaced the tray if I asked, but I just fixed it myself and I can live with it. I can see why they are stopping UPS delivery though.

I had an Oklahoma Joe offset for years and literally gave it away after I received my RecTeq. No Smoke tube.
Sure, there is something romantic about laboring over an offset for 18 hours to smoke a whole brisket.
However, I Also have other hobbies, and I like being able to throw a brisket on the RecTeq mid afternoon on Saturday, go golf Saturday afternoon then go out to eat with the wife, then wake up early in the morning, wrap the brisket and head out to fish, then get back to a done brisket that just needs to rest in a cooler.
The convenience is absolutely unmatched. Sure, you'll get a better sear on a kettle or ceramic. Sure, you'll get 10% better smoke profile from an offset or a drum, but I will, and have, trade those small advantages for the convenience.
Brisket
Smoked Barbacoa Tacos from beef cheeks.
Country Ribs, no sauce.
Smoked chicken and eggplant medallions.
Boudin stuffed pork loin - smoked.
Smoked Chuck roast for Tacos.

Your father-in-law must like thick smoke in his meat. I have a RecTec 700 at home, a great big Camp Chef Woodwind at work, and a Z Grill 7002E I believe is the model number at the camp. In my opinion that Z Grill has about the same amount of smokiness as the other two. I bought the Z Grill for the camp because it won’t get used all that much except during deer season and frankly it was all I could afford at that time. Truth be told that’s a pretty sturdy no frills pellet grill. I think your father-in-law needs to play around with it more because it does smoke meat nicely.

My buddy won one in a contest. I've only eaten off it once, a boston butt. It was as good as any pulled pork I've ever made on my offset, as good as any pulled pork I've had anywhere. I would not hesitate to buy one or recommend one. The one thing I've learned is you don't want to go dirt-cheap on them, lots of little cheap components can go bad rendering the whole thing useless. Go premium.

Where can I purchase one? The only place I see them in their company website and even that's confusing
