Gaines is a dawg on defense. He has great lateral movement and quick hands. He's also long and contests 3's better than the other guards. He's gonna be a heck of a playmaker in the future with his ball skills and court vision.

He/Hyatt/Leblanc will be huge in determining how far we go. Hyatt's ability to score and his improving defensive positioning/rebounding makes him more valuable IMO, than Wilkinson for this stretch run. Mwani will always give credible minutes on the defensive end but little offensively. Hyatt spreads the floor because teams aren't going to be able to cheat off him in the deep corner.

Lastly, Smart has become "the guy" we always wanted him to be. If they can get Watford to play under control and put him in better spots on the court to help us, We will be hard to deal with, as it should be with the talent we have!

Gaines has played great for a freshman.

Love how he attacks the basket.

Leblanc's arms are great on defense. He can be a big positive on that end when he locks in.

Gaines needs to develop an outside shot. We lose a shooter when he is on the court.

Yes, he needs to develop his offensive skills because he is a little out of control on offense when dribbling too, but he is super-fast and plays really good perimeter D (he has great hands with knocking the ball away from the dribbler and on passes too).

Hyatt was hot from three. Wish they had fed him more.

Agreed, but when cam or trendon take it toward the goal, they rarely kick it out, so his attempts will always be limited

Hyatt looked good, lacking confidence on finishing his drives though...to be expected at this point

Gaines is going to be Russell Westbrook for us. He makes some great passes. He’s lightning quick. He can get to the rim and finish on anyone. He can’t shoot though. Russell Westbrook.

He has the potential to finish on a lot of people because he is so fast, but most of the time he misses when he goes to the hoop. I believe his FG% is just over 20% for the year. He did have an awesome finish today with that play where he hung in the air sort of double-pumped it off of the backboard.

The thing I find most impressive about Gaines is his self awareness. He knows his strengths, he knows his weaknesses, and he knows his role when he gets minutes.

I RARELY see him take a bad shot lately. He does miss more than we'd like, but I think that's due to his body control. He sometimes seems like he gets going a bit too fast.

I think this team can go Elite 8. Realistically, my prediction is we make it Sweet 16, but Elite 8 and if you squint real hard and we are hot at the right time, Final 4 isn't that absurd. We just need to stay consistent in certain aspects that can get away from us easily. Conversely, I could totally see us getting bounced in the 1st round. It really is just who we get and how the team is feeling on that day.

I think everyone who watched this team all year was holding their breath with a couple minutes left when Tennessee went from down 15(?) to down 10 and then we turned the ball over. But I was really glad we finished it out and looked composed doing so after that.

Gaines is so fast his mistakes end up being moves. He’ll mishandle or lose the ball but is so quick he can grab it and blow by the defender before the guy has a chance to react.

Smart seems like he can take any guard to the rack off the dribble and his shooting has really improved. I've been really impressed with his progression.

Yes, LSU was 17-18 on free throws today. You will win most of the time doing that if you play solid everywhere else which LSU did today.

So good to see Smart playing without hesitation. I know Wade has had him trying to be a certain kind of point guard but you gotta cut someone like Smart loose. He’s not a selfish player and has always been loved by his teammates plus you’re not getting the assist trade off that would warrant putting shackles on him. Just let that guy go and good things will happen.

I LOVE Gaines.

His defense is unbelievable which I did not expect, and when he actually has the opportunity to do something with the ball, he always contributes, whether it's ball handling, passing, or scoring.

Oh man I think we got a good one in him.

I think our defense goes up GREATLY when Gaines & LeBlanc are in the game. I also think Gaines has the best hands of any defensive player at LSU in years , & he's usually the best defender on the court.

I hope in the future we’ll see a Cook + Gaines backcourt at LSU. Those two on defense can cause huge problems for opponents. They can cause an offense to start too far away from the basket and wear down guards with their pressure. Can’t wait to see what these 2 can do together.

Gaines has a sneaky high basketball IQ. That layup yesterday where he held his release mid air so UT couldnt block it was icy.

Experience really counts. You can see it in our two three year players, Smart and Dayes. They both have gotten better every year and are way ahead of where they were as Freshmen. I think Hyatt, Leblanc and Gaines can surprise a lot of people next year if they work hard in the off season. A shame we don't get to keep our guys four years any longer (well exception and shout out to Skylar). You can't teach game time in practice.
