Ross Dellenger has written an article for SI about the coming impact of the one-time transfer rule, NIL rules, the Covid-shirt year, etc. He points out that many of the 1500 or so players currently in the portal won't find landing spots, and the abundance of players in the portal will affect all aspects of recruiting going forward. BTW, he uses Mannie Netherly as an example of what can happen to a player who enters the portal. Really interesting stuff, with huge potential impact on the sport.

The fact that coaches have to now constantly recruit their own players is absurd. And most of these kids just want instant gratification if things don't go perfectly because the grass is always greener, so it's already started to be like the NBA and NFL in that regard.

The transfer portal in combination with the CFB playoff/selection committee has already started to sour the sport immensely.

From the article
quote:

The 25-man limit was implemented to disincentivize the trend of coaches cutting or pushing out scholarship players in an effort to oversign high school players or transfers.

Yet this is exactly what Bama has done every single year and the NCAA conveniently looks away and penalizes other schools for minor infractions like a kid getting a free pizza.
They have to find a way to enforce a strict 25-man limit or go even further and reduce the scholarships to stop the 5-6 big dogs from stockpiling all the talent if they are interested in a semblance of parity

It may take a few seasons, but these players are going to start realizing that the portal isn’t the answer.

What ever changes happen, you know Bama will take advantage of them. They are doing it now.

This article should be required reading by every player every year.

Undoubtedly it's about how scary Covid is. I don't think he's written about much of anything else.

There should be a rule requiring players to spend two years with the school they signed their original LOI with before being allowed to enter the transfer portal.

Barry says Group of Five coaches are worried about Power 5 teams poaching their best players, and Power 5 teams are fearing that their depth will suffer as talented backups leave for starting roles elsewhere. Recruiting a player from a college team before he enters the portal is against NCAA rules, but it’s still rampant now.

Geez that’s a great article. Very comprehensive and well written.

sounds like Netherly had opportunities, but he didn't want to play DB. i agree with this article that changes to the portal are needed. the NCAA kind of opened pandora's box with the 1x transfer rule.

it's a shame that a number of schools will have available scholarships and so many kids won't be able to play. NCAA should consider a 1x... sign up to 85 (over the 25 man limit) and let that be 1x and then get rid of the 1x transfer rule all together.

applying a 1x rule for kids and colleges in relationship to last 12 months is reasonable, but shouldn't be the go-forward standard imo.
