The political and economic attitudes of people in Northern England are interesting and not terribly comparable to anything here IMO. It's like if you took miners and out of work factory guys from our mostly-rural parts and packed them into urbanized areas and gave them the political leanings of Che shirt-wearing college kids.

This reads like the plot of Peaky Blinders on Netflix.

Well in the south, we are very diverse, and have many different races and cultures living here. Up north, it’s nothing but white people. North is racist

You talking about America because if you are you're full of shite with that the north isn't diverse crap.

he term paki is derogatory towards Pakistanis...so in that respect it’s similar. But i don’t think you can compare the 2 words as cross continental equivalents.....Black people and Pakistanis are completely different culturally.

I figured. But it’s good to know in case i visit, so as not to offend. I’m sure there are lots of slang words i’ll have never heard.

Honestly I don’t know and can’t talk on behalf of English black people.

African American is quite a common term... I’ve never heard of African English before so I’m guessing not!

and black people in Canada don't call themselves African Canadians either. Very odd.

Something else that is strange is Ebonics doesn't exist in Canada or the UK.

That's why I was asking. Interesting that here it's a common term, but in England black folks would just consider themselves English.

Apologies for the possibly stupid question, but is there a "black culture" in England, or is there just an "English culture" that folks of different races are a part of? Seems like there is a Pakistani culture, that is separate from your "typical" English culture. Just curious if there is a cultural divide there, like there is here.

Ha... I had to look that up as I’d never heard of it.

It certainly does exist. Just didn’t realise it had a name. Maybe it’s more regional dialect...kind of associate that with inner city London kids!

Yep absolutely. I don’t see it much because i live in the posh white southern counties.. but I imagine it’s very common in London and larger urban areas. That’s not to say we don’t have black people or black culture here... I do live in a city and it’s quite apparent... just not widespread.

Black people in America don’t really use the African American label too much these days

I've never really been up north but aren't different races a lot more intertwined in the south?

Sure, but dialects exist on a continuum. As you travel north from London up to the far reaches of Scotland, the accents get progressively more grating as the trip progresses. There's a sort of sing-song quality that all these accents share.

If you're talking flyover states yes but in the population base states of the east coast and north not really for the most part.

Whiteset States

Whitest States

I'll give you New England but that isn't the big population base in the north.

One thing I find fascinating is the theory that the "standard" American accent might be closer to what the English Accent was a few hundred years ago than what many English accents are now...

I’ve heard this too and found it very intriguing

I spent time in Southern Italy in the 90s, Naples or “Bella Napoli” to be exact. There was a big cultural divide with the northern part of the state.

True story: Neapolitans utilized the confederate flag as a symbol of the south. I’d see stickers on their mopeds and such. The confederate flag was even used on memorabilia for the Naples professional soccer team.

The confederate flag is also used in South America.
