Opossums look like they carry every disease in the book. Nasty frickers.
And you'd be way wrong. They're nearly 100% immune to rabies and other diseases, nearly immune to snake venom so they snack on snakes, and pretty much take care of other pests in your neighborhood. They're actually awesome to have around.

Nope. Opossums can't carry it.

People often mistake the open-mouth hissing and drooling behavior of opossums as a sign of rabies. However, this is just a bluffing behavior that opossums use as a defense mechanism. In fact, rabies is extremely rare in opossums, perhaps because they have a much lower body temperature compared to other warm-blooded animals.

You made me Google it.

If you live in NW Louisiana I'll loan you my Aussie Shepherd - your possum problem will be quickly eliminated.

And those cases are extremely rare. Their benefits far outweigh that rare risk. I get why people don't like them, but a lot of it is misleading.
From Terminix:
As a homeowner, you may see opossums as unwanted pests, but they can also be helpful critters. Having opossums around can be beneficial because they are known to eat harmful insects and annoying pests such as cockroaches, rats and snakes. In fact, a single opossum can eat up to 5,000 ticks a year, as found by the Environmental Institute of Houston.

Long time ago, my neighbor had a delcawed cat they'd let out and just roam. I was like "man, this isn't gonna end well". Eventually it got into it with a racoon. And well, long story short, it was brutal. People who do that should be in jail.

Your girlfriend's cat also got in a fight with one eyed Russell last night

The kitty got pretty dinged up - bleeding on her abdomen, face, and one of her paws. The GF (no pics) won't stop sobbing about "her baby," wondering if she should lock the cats inside from now on.
How do I convince her the damn thing is fine and nature will be nature? I guarantee the cat was fricking with the opossum and got what she deserved.
One night I woke up to some loud knocking at the side door. I thought someone was trying to break in. I go to the door to check it out, and it is my cat trying to drag a possum through the doggy door.
The point in saying this is thatif your girlfriend's cat got messed up by a possum, it sucks at being a cat. If it were a coon, or another cat, that is one thing, but cat is above possum in the food chain.

That is super rare for a cat or opossum to fight with each other.
I have several opossums that visit every single night with multiple outside cats and they all get along.. they even share food together. One is even a female cat that hates all other cats, but the opossums don't bother her.
How sure are y'all it was an actual opossum that attacked the cat? Did your gf actually witness the attack? I am not questioning your intelligence, so please don't be offended. I am just wondering if the actual attack was witnessed? I do believe it's possible if the cat went after it.
I have had opossums, racoons, armadillos, and cats all visit at night at the exact same time and eat together. None of them got into any fighting.

opossums are awesome animals.
they rarely carry any diseases that would affect us, they usually run from you, and they eat a ton of ticks.

Definitely shouldn't declaw a cat, but if you do it needs to always stay inside.
I lost a pet cat because he couldn't defend himself in his own backyard from a neighbor's dog. Was not my choice to declaw and I won't do it.

She’s lucky it was an opossum and not a coyote. It’s only a matter of time until it gets killed out there.

Don’t put cat food outside. Opossums love cat food.
