When is the last time a ND defensive coordinator was directly hired into a Power 5 HC position? Bo Aas hired directly from LSU to be HC at Nebraska. Aranda was hired directly from LSu to be HC at Baylor. Chief likely could have gone that route after 2011, but he never desired a HC position.

Freeman wanted to be at LSU. Much better position for him to directly transition to a power 5 HC job. ND coordinators will always have asterisk by their name due to their schedule and talent level. His next transition will likely be to a small school HC position, NFL DC or lower DC position( if ND doesn’t do well). He can thank his wife for adding an additional step to climb in his way to a P5 HC job. ND won’t field a Top 20 defense anytime soon.
