The things people think are "cool" now would have for sure got you beat up in the 90's.

Would I feel like a failure if my son was happy/healthy/productive and having fun on an app that I'm too old to understand?

No, no I wouldn't.

Why do y'all act like we are the first ever generation to look at the ones after us with confusion and animosity?

Was he giving some secret signals or something? How do you misunderstand an app?

Maybe "understand" was a poor choice of verbiage

We're old so we don't get why it's supposed to be interesting, the same way my parents didn't "get" video games and the same way their parents didn't "get" the 80s

and so on all the way back to the beginning of time

Every generation does this, but sometimes the criticism legitimate, like the Greatest and Silent generation's criticisms of the hippies. This might be a time when the X's and Millennials are correct. It is certainly more vapid and more easily widespread than, say, stuffing kids in phone booths or planking.

I get it..

It's an app that triggers high levels of dopamine in some younger people. Even my grandkids think it's silly.

All social media works in that way

Yes. All the big tik tok dancers’ main audience is pre teens. Some older kids follow the drama because they’re all taking turns fricking each other

In general, YouTubers, ig influencers, tik tokers, etc audience is a good bit younger than they are

so much so that for people like me, the algorithm the app uses doesn't even show you the demographic in the OP
