Turned down $2.5M

Council Member Cleve Dunn, Jr. is set to introduce the item next week with a vote and discussion scheduled for the council's Feb. 10 meeting. It proposes paying Sterling's five children $2 million a year for the next five years, with the first installment coming out of the city-parish's $17.7 million insurance reserve fund.

Lawyers for the city-parish in November offered to settle the case for $2.5 million. That proposal was ultimately turned down by Sterling's heirs, who lost their father in a 2016 police shooting that ignited protests nationwide and continues to divide Baton Rouge.
Dunn was on the front lines of those protests locally and said that, in the years since, he's grown to know members of Sterling's family personally. He said nobody truly understands the pain they've gone through.
"We need to say that this government — this police department — was wrong and we need to move forward," Dunn said. "We need to make amends to this family."

Why don't they just let the lawyers handle this?

Why would that criminal's family get any money from the city when an investigation resulted in no charges filed for anyone involved? Well, they would have filed charges on him, but....

If his family gets 10 million bucks out of this why would people be mad at the cops anymore? That’s about 10 million more dollars than Alton Sterling would have provided for them.

I thought 10 million was already proposed and shut down?

Exactly. Seems all that family cares about is money. Never mind the fact the reason he is dead is because of his own stupidity.

Sucking this money out of an insurance policy, yea like that's not going to raise the premium of the policy and the bill goes to the taxpayers.
shite is dumb, just like most of city council.

I don't understand this. There is zero chance a 2m judgment would even be upheld at 5th.

This is a money laundering scheme.
Give the family a slice of the pie while dividing the rest up amongst yourselves.

So the city council couldn't get enough votes to send $5 million dollars last November, so I guess the idea is that it wasn't ENOUGH money?
WTF is happening on EBR Metro Council?

Which is why half of the council is hellbent on pushing through these settlements hoping that the other half will negotiate down and accept one of them.
Make no mistake: these council members are not representing the city in any way. They are directly representing that family (and most likely their kickbacks) to your detriment.

nothing like bullying city council members by calling them racist, so they are forced to vote to fork over millions of tax payer dollars for a dead convict.

$5 million was proposed and shot down, so obviously let’s double it and bring it back up for a vote with the new council.

They obviously projected Alton’s CD business was about to start trending up using the most accurate modeling tools available. Then they took that 5 year trend and brought it to present value and boom! $10 million.
