So seeing the college football numbers and the current state of the CFP has me thinking; Disney really has to regret a lot of the huge contracts ESPN signed with sports leagues right? They signed a lot of these at the height of the 2000s sports bubble or towards the tail end of the golden years, especially in college football.

Things feel like they’re trending overall down for the sport. It’s getting less and less regional interest and even with people stuck at home the championship game was worse than the previous all time low by like 25% viewership. I think the previous low was 24M and thus one was 18M.

The SEC is about to sign a deal with them and I think weekly SEC game of the week viewership is strong, but how about elsewhere? I imagine Monday night football for the cost they pay for it isn’t worth it. The SEC network I imagine isn’t worth today what it was thought it would be at this point when it first launched right? Or does SEC football keep that channels viewership afloat?

I don’t watch or follow the NBA outside of lightly on this board so not sure how their viewership is doing other than that their Christmas numbers were down this year (but also competing with the NFL).

Not sure about MLB and not worried about hockey because it’s never gotten big enough to create a contract bubble.

All of them except the NFL. Sports television ratings are going to get worse and worse with the explosion of streaming and other entertainment options available.

College football is becoming the NBA where only 7-8 teams really have a chance at the title year in and year out. There’s no excitement to watch SEC School vs Ohio St/Clemson every single year

They’re going to have to expand the playoffs at some point to start giving some of these other teams a chance in order to get new viewers watching. 98% chance you’ll never get a Loyola-Chicago, George Mason, Davidson type of Cinderella run in football but the chance has to be given.

MLB is really fricking themselves over (and everyone else) with their blackout policies. It’s archaic and completely unnecessary

The CFBNCG shouldn’t be on a Monday Night and it shouldn’t be on cable.

The SEC is going to regret ceding all contracts to ESPN.

ESPN's game coverage is getting increasingly worse, they are beginning to force games onto ESPN+, the conference is no longer the #1 featured game on it's own OTA network which is a major decrease in prestige, and it's a lock that ESPN will eventually force games into Friday and Thursday night time slots.

NBC- Sunday night football didn't do well this year

Thanksgiving game last year(New Orleans/Atlanta) 1MM for 30 second spot, this year was free.

quote:

NBC was perhaps the hardest-hit this Thanksgiving, typically a big day for NFL viewership. The Ravens-Steelers game, which originally cost advertisers an average of $1 million for 30 seconds of commercial time, drew only 11 million viewers, almost a 50% decline from the audience for last year’s Thanksgiving game on NBC.

Some Thanksgiving advertisers that appeared in the NBC game on Wednesday didn’t pay at all, instead accepting the commercial time as a make-good for games earlier in the season that delivered disappointing ratings, according to people familiar with the matter.

“We’ve worked with every one of our partners individually to find what works best for them,” an NBC Sports spokesman said in an email. “We will have delivery solutions for all of our NFL advertisers this season.”

The Networks (NBC/FOX/CBS/ABC-ESPN) need the NFL ratings to be up by 15% to make good on the decline in ratings for NCAA/NBA/MLB/PGA/NHL, instead they were down by 7%.

But none of that matters because the ratings decline wasn't as bad non sports primetime TV. People stop watching CSIs, FBIs shows.... in greater numbers than live sports.

Fox paying $400M for the 2018 & 2022 Men's World Cup only to then have the US team not qualify for 2018.

Ouch.

Cutting cables and variations thereof. When ESPN has exclusives and the potential viewership has decided to do without ESPN, viewership will continue to drop and advertising slots will be harder to sell, or to sell at any price.

There is no equivalent of The Mouse That Roared to save ESPN 's shrinking revenues.
