I have finally decided to start looking for a new truck. I am in a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 with 5.3L V8. I glanced at the new units and there are 3 gas engines offered. I was shocked to see a 2.7L Turbo unit in the lineup. Any thoughts from guys who may have bought any of them recently? It will be a daily driver and I do pull a boat some on weekends (about 3000# B/M/T).

Get the 10spd transmission in whichever you get.

If the 6.2L is out of the picture, I’d recommend the 5.3L for the gas engine. They reworked the DFM to where it activates in random cylinders instead of the same 4. I haven’t seen many complaints about the engine, only the 8spd. If an option, I’d recommend the 3.0 Diesel engine as well. I would not recommend the smaller engines in these trucks, particularly if you’re gonna be towing anything.

For the record, I have the GMC 5.3L with the 8 Spd. I really have no complaints.

I've had and have the 5.3 in 4 Yukon XLs, they are bulletproof. Every truck over 200K miles, one over 400K, with no engine issues (other than wear parts).

I have a 4.3L V6. I have had no problems. 20 MPG on avg. and 17 MPG when pulling a large bass boat. Pulls the boat like a V8.

I’d like to try the new 3.0L diesel. Supposedly has a range of over 700 miles before you need to refill.

I want one of those trail boss packages with the 6.2L

Had an 06 with the 4.8 and 180,000 miles. Traded it in for a 2020 with the 5.3 and 8 speed. I love it, pull the same weight boat and it does just fine "dont even know it's back there". It can pull up to 9600lbs. I average about 21MPG, that's driving hwy 90 about 35 miles each way.

Test drive the Turbo 4, it had good power but it's a new engine. For the cost savings and barely better gas mileage I went with the tried and true 5.3.

Go watch some videos on The Fast Lane Truck on YouTube, where they test the different engines in them. They have some unbiased info and real world towing results.

If you’re stuck on GM they will be totally redesigning the interior for the 22 models. The 3.0L Duramax seems nice, but you’re stuck with a puny 24 gallon tank and the oil pump requires the transmission to be dropped in order to service. If their 2.7 is anything like the 2.7 ecoboost I have only heard it is a quick and zippy engine to drive especially if you don’t tow heavy. I used to not like the 5.3 as I knew numerous people where they drank oil and GM wouldn’t do anything, but it sounds like they have improved.

The small v6 turbos are good, but I think it’s a mental issue to get over for most guys. I’m looking at a new F150 and if I would have the truck I was going to give the 2.7 a try but it happened to have the 5.0.

I went from an 06 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 to a 2020 Sierra with the 8 speed 5.3. I love it. I have an X31 with the Elevation package. Pulls great. Smooth ride.

I was going to get the 3.0 diesel but they didn’t want to put some AT tires instead of the road tires.

5.3 is your answer.

I have the 2020 AT4 with the 5.3 and use it to pull my Nitro Z-18. Like you it's a daily driver and I get good mileage with it.

They have a belt running the oil pump that GM recommends to be changed at 125 or 150,000 miles (I don't remember which). In order to change said belt either the engine or transmission/transfer case has to be removed, it's on the rear of the engine.

My mom has a 2019 Yukon with less than 25,000 miles that just had the engine replaced. I need to find out which has V8 she has.

Oil was disappearing and they couldn't figure out why, was also having lifter issues.

Badinfluence, I am interested to know more about the 4.3V6. Is that on a 2020 truck or an older unit? I like my 5.3L and my son has a 2004 Sierra with the 4.8L V8; that motor is good too. But the trucks I am looking at have either the 4.3 or the 2.7 turbo. I am most afraid of that 2.7; sound like more stuff to break (turbo).

5.3 is tried and true. I'd go with the 6.2 but after that I'd get the proven 5.3L. One of the best gas motors of all time.

I have a 2014 Silverado with the 4.3. I had a 2007 Silverado with a 4.8 V8 prior to the 2014. The V8 did not pull as well as the 4.3 V6.
