Mark of the Beast

Revelation 13 gives us strong clues about when the Mark of the Beast will begin to be given out to the public.
Revelation 13:4-7
“(4) And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? (5) And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. (6) And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. (7) And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.” (Revelation 13:4-7)
The False Prophet will arise as a major figure on the world stage at that time. He will urge people to worship the Antichrist and to accept the Mark of the Beast:
“(11) And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. (12) And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. […] (16) And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: (17) And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. (18) Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.” (Revelation 13:11-12, 16-18)
The Mark of the Beast Will Be a Choice
We can see that the Mark of the Beast will be a choice by the fact that not everyone will accept it. Revelation 20:4 recognizes a group of beheaded individuals who are without the Mark.
“And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years” (Revelation 20:4)
The fact that people had the choice to say “no” means that the Mark of the Beast was not forced upon them. The people cited in Revelation 20:4 rejected the Mark of the Beast because they stood strongly for their beliefs.
With that said, the authorities will go to extremes to compel people to “voluntarily” become part of the Mark of the Beast system:
They will deny people without the Mark of the Beast the ability to buy and sell.
They will brutally oppress those who have not yet become part of the Mark of the Beast system.
Therefore, you will be given a choice about whether to opt into the Mark of the Beast system or not. The choice is basically: become part of the system or survive on your own. It’s not an appealing choice, but there’s a choice nonetheless.

Growing up my pastor always felt like the beast was a computer - I think it’s the internet - be he saw it coming through computers

Many have accepted the mark already and many are doing so presently and many more will in the future.
Nobody is getting a 666 stamped on their head or hand. Like much of Revelation and other prophecy, symbolism is primary in describing future events.
The head represents accepting and being willingly controlled by evil thoughts and ideas. The hand represents ones works and actions being used to demonstrate acceptance of evil. You are correct that those who carry the mark have done so willingly and under their own power.
