Why David Reeves should be the next DC

I get the love fest for Marcus Freeman, but I personally feel/felt that LSU should be going after David Reeves at UAB. He checks a lot of boxes.
1) Ed O’s preferred attacking style? UAB has 92 sacks and 217 Tackles for loss in last two seasons.
2) coaching young defense? UAB lost 8 starters in 2019 and still finished top 10 in the NCAA in total defense.
3) Third-and-Chavis & Third-and-Aranda are popular around here... UAB was top-10 in 3rd down defense in 2018 and 2019
Bottom line: this guy is a two-time Broyles award finalist and has had some nasty, disruptive defenses. He’s also a defensive line guy. I think he’s the one.
What you say?

WTF? UAB’s DC? I think we can aim higher.

I agree totally. I like Arnett just as much though.

It doesn’t matter what school he’s at as long as he succeeds and significantly separates himself from other DCs in D1
Not a bad option to explore

Clark, the head coach at UAB, is a great defensive coach. My concern is how much input and influence Clark has on David Reeves's success.

Exactly.

Well he must have learned something in the past three years about DC-ing from working so closely with Clark.

He's 51. That's a bit too old for this board. They want 35 with 20 years experience.

Fickell, the head coach at Cincinnati, is a great defensive coach. My concern is how much input and influence Fickell has on Marcus Freeman’s success.

The bigger key is that he’s already proven himself on an SEC level.

Don't all coaches grow under the influence of other coaches at some point in their careers? We just hired two coaches because of their association to Brady and his style of offense.

Why doesn’t this same logic apply to the new offensive hires learning under Brady?

Reeves is the best candidate out there that I think would actually come. Many of the others we are looking at have already turned down good offers.

I have less concern about that than the level he’s coaching at. There’s a big gap between the top of the AAC and MWC and the rest of G5. There are a few good programs like App St, Liberty and Coastal, but they tend to feast on a lot of bad teams with mediocre talent in their conferences.
It’s hard to know how he will translate to the top tier of P5 football. I still think he’s a good candidate, but there are others I would call before him.

This is my thing. If you look at UAB defenses over recent years they are all top 20. He’s proven he’s not a “one hit wonder”. As I see it, he’s the least risky hire. Also, don’t understand the “not a power 5 coordinator” argument. He’s coaching talent on par with the rest of his league. He would have a talent advantage at LSU over almost every SEC school.

Reeves would be outstanding. Go get him.

My thoughts exactly . I liked him over Freeman to begin with

He is better than every other candidate but Arnett imo. Would be a redeeming snag after the Freeman dilemma.

I think he would be a great get!
