Los Angeles ambulance crews told not to transport patients with little survival chance

quote:Los Angeles County hospitals are now so inundated with COVID-19 patients, ambulance crews are reportedly being instructed to conserve use of oxygen and not to transport patients that have little chance of survival.
The number of coronavirus hospitalizations in L.A. County has surged 305% since Thanksgiving. Some emergency patients have to sit in ambulances for hours.
The Los Angeles Times obtained a memo by the L.A. County Emergency Medical Services Agency that was issued Monday. It states that ambulance crews should conserve oxygen by only giving it to patients who have oxygen saturation levels below 90%. That comes following a directive last week that ambulance crews should not transport patients to the hospital who have virtually no chance for survival. CNN reports crews are instructed to attempt resuscitation for at least 20 minutes until the patient is stabilized. If a pulse is not restored or if the person is declared dead at the scene, they are not to be brought to the hospital.

The Times reports emergency rooms are so full, patients are waiting as long as eight hours inside ambulances before a bed opens up. That means those ambulances can't respond to other emergency calls, including those not related to the coronavirus.
“We do not believe that we are yet seeing the cases that stemmed from the Christmas holiday. This, sadly, and the cases from the recent New Year’s holiday, is still before us, and hospitals across the region are doing everything they can to prepare," L.A. County director of health services Dr. Christina Ghaly said at a Monday Briefing, the Times said. 2021 tells 2020... hold my beer

So lockdowns do not work?

Remember when this same rumor was started in New York?
ETA
I’m not sure about the oxygen but that seems like that is a supply issue
Sounds more like a staffing issue in the ER than anything
How many Covid calls are dead on scene? Sounds more like wrecks & shootings

Seems reasonable

percentages are SCARY.
this could mean an increase from 1 to 3, 10 to 30 or 100 to 300.

Why do these people always blame the holidays for every increase in Covid cases? It's always because of Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and so on. It's as if we could have avoided this whole thing by just cancelling all the holidays.

You don't understand. It's like Communism. They just didn't do it right.

Isn’t California on severe lockdowns? Clearly working.

LA and SF need a hard reset. A 12.0 magnitude earthquake would be a great start.

Exactly. If/when numbers improve, it's because the policies are good...when the numbers are bad, it's because the people have been naughty!
