Is it a better option instead of gambling on guys like Leigh?

Is it a wiser option to grab multiple 3 and 4 star lineman instead exhausting a ton of resources on guys who are 20 hrs from br?

Well, you’d have to give up on Olujari, Patrick Peterson, Chaisson, Jacob Phillips, Arden Key, Deculus, and Max Johnson. Does that answer your question?

Are those guys 20 hrs from BR?

Better option is to have an OL coach that can recruit.
Posted on 1/2/21 at 7:41 pm to Mbeloso
They tried and missed on all of them except dellenger
But to answer your question- no
The solution is to except your very well paid coaches to do their fricking job. Not to lower expectations

Even when you seek out the best quality you can get for OL you end up with a high rate of chaff vs. wheat. With a limit of 25 spots, you need to maximize it. Except for 3 or 4 OTs and 5-8 OGs forget about rankings. After they are off the board you are looking for recruits that already have the hardest to teach (or impossible) traits, or the beginnings of them. For example, you can improve natural agility. It's very very hard to create it from almost nothing.
Which brings the 2nd part of your post into focus... resources. The assumption that geography is going to expend your "standard" recruiting resources is wrong. Yes, it will have an impact. But there's enough to recruit 4 and 5 star OTs all over the country.
But to evaluate the one's that are no-miss recruits is what is hard. For OL (and DL) game film isn't enough. You need to drill them and look for a solid foundation. You have to see them in action; that includes vs. dummies/cones and other players. Play to play there's just not enough information in game film about the OLman's level of physical skills. THAT is where you run out of recruiting resources.
So in a way, you go after those 4 OTs and 8 OGs with all your standard recruiting resources that aren't really in short supply. You save the majority of your time and evaluations for their backup plans.
The best way to narrow your search with OLmen is old school HS coaches network. Coaches at Carthage HS will know if Nacadoches HS has an OLman with special skills. You also establish lines with the HS's that actually teach OL technique. Running plays is not teaching technique. Some put effort into it. Some don't. Those that do should be your first call. But instead of hunting for them, if you establish a good HS coaching network they'll feed names to you. Then you can see them workout and evaluate them.

Being lied to and led on isn’t part of the job description

that's literally a major part of the job description of a college recruiter

I will say part of the job too is recognizing you are, or might be, getting played. And then reducing your risk accordingly.
It's not easy. Do you throw an ultimatum at the only unsigned 5* OT (answer: maybe)? Do you play him back (answer: Yes)?
But ferreting out such things is indeed part of it.

So how does one avoid this down the road ?

Recruit better
Make LSU so desirable so this doesn't happen
You don't see Bama, OSU, or Clemson dealing with this end of the stick

Until we get a stud Oline coach who can recruit we'd be better off getting sevral 3* Olinemen and 1 4*. Instead of waiting for 1 magic 5* that dude ain't gonna fix the whole OLine lol!

Exactly we recruit on the elite level at every other position. LSU can draw elite recruits, the problem is our OL coach cant.
