While there is no way to know the actual history of that era, I much prefer Bernard Cornwell’s version in his Saxon Tales novels about Utred. At least he admits where he takes liberties to fit his story. Plus, Ivar and Ubba are real badass Vikings in his books.
Remember that Vikings also takes into account parts of the Volsunga Saga and the Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok. It takes it and kind of mixes it with history. Lots of liberties are taken, though. Rollo wasn't Ragnar's brother, and didn't found Normandy until like WAY later. The biggest liberties I think they take is with the timeline. But it's a good starting off point if you want to read about the history.
I love both shows. I especially love how Vikings attempts to use some of the Old languages in the dialogue. My biggest issue with both shows is the fricking costumes. Hollywood is obsessed with dressing historical figures in this BDSM leather crap. All the vikings (in both shows look ridiculous), as well as the Anglo-Saxons. The reason this pisses me off so much is that it's super easy to get the wardrobe historically accurate and you don't have to sacrifice the story or anything for it.

And both shows are time compressed. I have no problem with that. Ragnor might have been a real person lost to history to become myth. And the myth was the amalgamation of several Men from the Viking age. I suspect the sons of Ragnor claimed or were given that title as a claim to fame the way Ragnor claims to be the son of Oden in the series.
I love both Saxon and Viking history. I just hate what the series did to Ivar the Boneless.
ETA: I have the Volsunga saga, saga of Ragnor Lothbrok and the Saxon chronicles and a couple others on my kindle. They are laborious reading, especially the Saxon Chronicles, so I haven’t read them completely through. Usually just read areas to follow the two series.

Dawson was an incredible Alfred. Just absolutely perfect in every way. Most of the casting is great. So much of Uhtred’s character is based on his belligerence which the soft spoken and short statured actor just doesn’t convey well.

I definitely agree with all of this.
Also, not sure if you have it, but Jackson Crawford has a translation for Volsunga and Ragnar sagas. He does a pretty good job of translating it for a modern audience so it doesn't sound as archaic as some of the older translations. Anyway, you should check him out if you get the chance. He also has a great youtube channel.

The only thing that kind of bugs me is how the story takes place over such a long period of time yet only a handful of the characters look like they have aged. Alfred seemed to have aged the most, but I'm not sure how much of that was due to them making him older or more sickly. They also do a good job of making Aelswith look much older than the actress who portrays her.
Everyone else never ages. Father Beocca looked to be in his mid 50s when Uhtred was a child. As of season 4, Beocca should be somewhere between 80-90 years old, yet he looks not a bit different and literally rides into battle with Uhtred.
Per what we know of history, Aethelflaed should be around 40 years old (she dies about 9-10 years after her husband), yet she looks like she's in her 20s. Same with the actor that played her husband.

This is a good point. I think in season 4 we see Uhtred's daughter who is like completely grown up, and is probably only a few years younger than alexander dreymon in real life.

I read Benard Cornwell's The Saxon Series before the Series came to TV.
Great books. The TV show is great as well.

The books are on my list. Unfortunately, I have not read them yet. I want to find a nice hardback or leatherback set of the books to read. I like collecting leatherback books.

The Saxon Tales are relatively short and simple reads. Not sure if I would spend more than paperback or kindle prices on them if that is what you meant.

Oh, there is an actual Utred of Bamburg, who has nothing to do with the Saxon Tales, but he was an ancestor to Cornwell and he thought it would be fun to make him the hero.
Still, I wouldn’t spend excessive on his books because they are simple stories told in simple language and will never be considered classics. But I love his narrative voice and recommend all of his books, especially Agincourt.

I know I'm late to the party on this, but dang is this a great series. About halfway through Season 4 and this is in my Top 5 of favorite shows now. Just entertaining as hell.

This is all I could find..."It will begin filming in early 2022, and is expected to premiere in late 2022 or early to mid 2023".
That is a very vague release time
