BATON ROUGE - LSU has had contact with former Vanderbilt football coach Derek Mason concerning the Tigers' defensive coordinator opening.

quote:

"There have been some conversations," Mason said in a phone interview Wednesday night. "I'm taking some time right now. I'm spending time with my family. But I'll say this, I have the utmost respect for Coach Orgeron. I truly believe he's an unbelievable coach. And LSU is a top five program as far as talent, resources and what it can do."

quote:

The top candidate on Orgeron's wish list for defensive coordinator is Cincinnati defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman, who is in his fourth season at that position with the Bearcats.

quote:

Freeman, 33, has his unit at No. 11 in the nation in total defense with 314.4 yards allowed a game. A fifth round NFL Draft pick out of Ohio State in 2009, Freeman previously coached at Ohio State as a graduate assistant in 2010, Kent State as a linebackers coach from 2011-12, and Purdue as a linebackers coach from from 2013-16.

Freeman should be 1. He’s damn good.

People here are going to melt over his 3-3-3 adaptable scheme. But it’s what modern college DCs are pretty much all going to against spreads.

I feel like Freeman would also be a great recruiter. He’s young and can relate to these younger kids.

Something is missing here.

I could handle freeman.
I don't want a coach that pleases Ryan Clark and women

3-3-3 is a variant of the 3-3-5. It uses 3 safeties and 2CBs instead of 3 CBs and 2 Safeties like the old school 3-3-5.

They may be melting because he only has 9 people on the field.

Or that people are too dumb to figure out what it is and think it literally means there are 9 people.

It’s a 3-3-5. Not sure why you call it 3-3-3. In a base 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 the 5th DB is a safety/LB hybrid. When they go with 3 CB’s and 2 safeties that is a nickel package of a 3-3-5

Freeman should be at the top of the list without a doubt.

It is but DCs have been calling the very recent mutation of it the 3-3-3 just to distinguish it from the 3-3-5 of old. It’s not something I’m making up man.

It is a very adaptable scheme though so they all run a bunch of different looks and variations depending on matchup.
