Outside of the ridiculousness of the ten year and 60 days stuff, a wealth tax is invasive as hell. I guess you’ll have to file a personal financial statement with your tax return.

The 60 days part is marginally legal, as NY state has stringent laws about your presence in NY state qualifying you for in state rates.

Requiring you to pay a wealth tax for 10 years after leaving? SCOTUS would bitch slap them for that.

Id qualify. I won’t pay it. And I’d drop every customer in CA in a second.

How do they calculate.. or better yet, know??

Every couple of years, I and a couple of co workers go out there once a month from Thurs - Tuesday for software stuff. Every month. That's 60 days. Does that mean they gonna need to see my personal balance sheet?

Some states have agreements with other states to help them collect taxes. It might not be as easy as you think to thumb your nose at CA.

But ONLY for the income you earn while in the state, right? They can't possibly tax you on income earned somewhere else when you weren't a resident in the state. Can they?

What's next?

"We, as California, are now going to tax all residents of Tennessee, Montana and Virginia. 10% of any income they earn anywhere."

Pretty sure there is a difference between garnishing income owed to another state and a completely new tax which of questionable legality.

States would have to work out a Memorandum Of Understanding to collect for it.

Actually...

Pretty sure NY state tries to tax ALL your income at NY state rates if you qualify as a resident. Hence why there was such an outflow of high income residents under David Paterson around a decade ago.

Texas will be a purple state in 5-10 years. I'm not happy about it but it is what's happening.

I’m not talking about garnishment. The point I’m making is that if I live in LA and do contract work in MS, I have to file a MS income tax return and pay if I owe it. If I refuse, MS contacts LA Dept of Revenue and says pursuant to agreement they are requesting assistance to collect. I guess it would be similar to garnishment if you had a refund of LA income tax, but they pay to MS.

It's not. Will fail a Constitutionality challenge for sure.

Sounds like the U.S. You have to pay an exit tax.

My point is that such an arrangement is based on it being INCOME.

If they start trying to do a wealth tax, any current inter-state agreements wouldn’t cover it because it is a new tax.
