A friend of my daughter had her Springer Spaniel operated on. It was an emergency hysterectomy and she was charged $4000. Does this sound high to you guys?

Sounds about right. Vets will charge whatever you will pay to keep your property alive.

Was it Med Vet?
Metairie?

At least double a scheduled procedure. It costs to have a vet and staff sitting around 24 hours a day waiting on a patient to come in.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I don’t have pets.

Yes. Sounds very high. I had a dog that had emergency surgery for an obstructed colon and it cost around $1200. $4000?? No way.

Possibly a little high but it depends on the situation.
-location? Is this in NYC or Baton Rouge? Big difference
- was that just the cost of the surgery or also diagnostics, imaging, recovery/observation for a couple of days in the hospital?
- "emergency spay"...did she have a pyometra? That's a life threatening situation which has to be done very carefully to prevent the uterus from opening and emptying pus into the abdominal cavity. If the uterus had already burst, it's an extensive surgery to clean out the abdominal cavity, IV antibiotics and fluid support to prevent sepsis, etc

It likely wasn’t the normal vet right? Id call the normal vet and ask them.
Vet billing always seems all over the place to me but I’m sure they have methods. One day you’ll go in for basically routine check up and it’ll be $400 and the next time you have a minor surgery and it’s $250.
To be fair OP, if it was a human surgery $4000 out the door is like a Mexico special.

My daughter called me upset about her lab. Kids screwed up and let the dogs out of the fenced in backyard. Lab got hit. Broken hip. To operate and get her back on her feet ...$5500. I took my daughter aside and told her .."I can pay this, but you will have a dog in misery in three years because of issues surrounding the hip. I will build a "No escape fence and gate, plus buy you a new puppy Lab for far less than $5500 ....the kids forget about your loss in two weeks." The dog was put down for $200.

Some find this harsh, but I find it practical. No way in hell I'd put out $5K to operate on any animal.
I don't understand people that will damn near go broke or put themselves in debt for a couple years to allow a vet to operate on an animal that is a household pet.
And the last animal I put down cost me $.25 or less for the cost of a single shell.

VcA charged me 1200 just to put some charcoal treatment in my dog and watch him in a kennel one night. I contested the charge on my Amex and won. Screw them.
They told me $580 then doubled it. After I already purged the dog with peroxide.

It sounds like the animal was in a dire situation, so it's not as simple as it may sound. I'm sure there were others assisting with the surgery and there was some post-care and possibly even some complications during surgery since it was an emergency situation. You have to also consider that the dog had to get some anesthesia and additional meds post surgery. It is a lot but it was also after hours and we don't know all the details. The good news is the dog is okay, right?

A .22 bullet is about $0.16.

Jesus man, are you that poor you can’t pay a couple hundred bucks so you don’t have to see your dogs brains get blown out?
Not sure why you wear that as a badge of honor

It was done with a .22, so no brains were blown out. It was quick and efficient.
And it's not a badge of honor, it's just practical in my eyes to not give a vet a couple hundred dollars to shoot a concoction into its veins. The end result is the same.

To you maybe. Some people develop a bond with their pets. There is a reason they are called man’s best friend.
I have too much respect for my dog to put a bullet in his brain. To each their own. I just find it off putting that people brag about how little it cost to shoot their dog in the head. Like it makes you a badass or something. It’s one thing to pull the trigger, it’s a different level of creepy to pull the trigger and brag about it.
