To you maybe. Some people develop a bond with their pets. There is a reason they are called man’s best friend.

I have too much respect for my dog to put a bullet in his brain. To each their own. I just find it off putting that people brag about how little it cost to shoot their dog in the head. Like it makes you a badass or something. It’s one thing to pull the trigger, it’s a different level of creepy to pull the trigger and brag about it.

Who’s bragging? It’s a pragmatic solution. What’s more ridiculous: being ok with ending an animals life at your own hands or being ok with wasting thousands of dollars to keep an animal alive?

Life lesson at 14. Dog got in poison and the vet said there was nothing he could do. So Dad said he's your dog you have to decide if he suffers or if you can the pull the trigger. And he certainly wasn't being cheap but rather teaching how to man up and deal with unpleasant things. Thunder went away loved.

Removing a skin growth,1 tooth removal, and dental cleaning: $950. So yeah, I believe it.

Jesus man, are you that poor you can’t pay a couple hundred bucks so you don’t have to see your dogs brains get blown out?

Not sure why you wear that as a badge of honor

The dog gave me everything it had. And I gave him everything I could.

I will never do a dog the disservice of having a stranger put him to sleep. It'll eat at me for a few days, but it is the least I can do someone I called a friend for 7-13 years.

After reading all the replies, I have learned that every individual treats their pets different. Also after more research, the older more established vets are considerably more in tune with costs to a client. The young millenials think very highly of their services.

Coon, I think you and I are arguing a point that many of the Gen X and Millenial generation simply don't understand. They like to have their dirty work done by others and prefer to "Call the man" when things get nasty and tough choices need to be made.

Like you said, I wasn't bragging, just giving a simple solution to a problem where the end result is the same when it comes to putting down an animal, even if it is a pet.

These same folk probably couldn't think of living off-grid and having to deal with the task of killing hogs, chickens that no longer lay eggs, meat rabbits, etc. for food.

Well said, and exactly how I feel.

Look, my wife and I have both discussed what we'd prefer if a medical situation arose that had no real good prognosis. I told her to not hesitate to have the hospital staff pull the plug if I was only being kept alive by machines or even if I could survive but be a vegetable needing care 24-7. I'd prefer to be dead than live in that situation.

I was 100% on board with Dr. Kevorkian and his end of life practices.

I told mine she has to blow me every day for a year. If I'm still not awake she can pull the plug

All of our dogs have passed knowing they were loved being petted while in someone’s arms.
I would not feel right about doing it myself, they would sense my unease.

Regarding the vet visit I’ve had a few different situations where I’ve had to go to LSU or an ER clinic. Both let you know charges up front & IIRC LSU has you sign that you agree to pay them in full.

I love a good “vets are too expensive” thread.

The older vets are not likely $500k in debt.

Well the current topic we are discussing is more like your wife sneaking up behind you with a .22 and putting a bullet in your head. Not the same as unplugging a machine.

To each their own. I’m not afraid of doing the dirty work. If the vet wants me to push the medicine to put him to sleep peacefully then stop his heart I would do it.

I just think the act of putting a bullet in his brain is less appealing and would make it harder for me to cope with the loss.

Again, I guess everyone is different. It’s just strange to me.

re: Veterinarian Cost
Here it is. Roughly same cost as medical school to become an MD, but no payback help from hospitals. Going 400k in debt to become a vet then have people curse you out over every little charge that usually barely covering the drug costs. Remember, anesthesia is still very expensive drugs no matter human or pet just different amounts.

To each their own for paying or not paying to keep pets alive, but see the other side of what it takes.
