rivers’ second contract was 3/33.
hardly minimum
you really think lonzo is going to do better than that?
obviously I disagree but make a case.
who is going to pay lonzo 4/60? Or even 4/45?

Only JJ took more threes per game than Lonzo, and only JJ and Ingram made more threes per game. I think not being the main ball handler will help Lonzo grow his game. Remember, it’s not like Lonzo is 26 and his game is set. Let Lonzo continue to grow. If you say you expected Ingram to be as good as he was last year, you’re lying. Let Lonzo grow too. See what he gives in a year where he has to be good to stay on this team.
I sometimes think people are entirely too hard on Lonzo. Last year was his first year in Gentry’s high flying offense with a bunch of new player on an already high turnover team. Lonzo improved his shooting. He’s still can fill up the stat sheet with assist, points, and rebounds. Let’s give a young player more than one year to get familiar with a new team.

I’m with you, I think you made a solid post my friend. I like lonzo, I would just like to see him progress a little more and stay a part of this team at the right price.

I think the concerns about his future salary are very valid and it's unlikely he's a fit with the Pels long term. As for criticisms of his game, think about how long it took people to forgive Jrue for not being a true floor general. Once people accepted Jrue wasn't a PG they started viewing him much differently.

I like Alonzo as a floor general. Ball is a great passer and has a high bbiq. He uses the pass and movement not the dribble to breakdown defenses. He does not need the basketball in his hands which is a great asset.
He is versatile especially as a rebounder. His unselfishness paints a distorted view to his critics. Lonzo needs the right fit. He and Jrue were mismatches on tloffense. Ball needs movement from his teammates to maximize his passing skills.
His game is simple with minimal flash. He makes his teammates better. If he develops a floater he will be the engine that runs the Pelicans for the next decade.

It's obvious how good your take was going to be with how badly you misspelled his name. Which was a terrible take of course.

His real name is Alonzo.
That's the dad's name

I just don't see Ball as a SG. He has great size and might develop the strength. But he is not a scorer. In my mind, a SG is an explosive scorer with the ability to score in bunches. In three seasons, Ball has never cracked 30 points in a game. He will get better as a shooter, but he is never going to get his own shot or take a guy off the dribble. I get why people want to put him there. He's just never going to be anything special in that spot..

That's the problem with Lonzo, he has such a mix match of skills and also deficiencies that you can't peg him into one hole

What is a Power Forward in your mind? What about a Small Forward? Because we have players at those two positions who are explosive scorers. Not all teams are built the same, our team is built around two scoring forwards, it’s highly unlikely that we pair an explosive SG with those two players. A more likely scenario is that we’re going to pair role players at center, and the two guard spots with our two star forwards.
I’m not sure why I even typed out this response...

So a point guard always has to be the one to handle the ball, and the power forward always has to be the strong but agile big guy, and the center always has to stay in the middle of the paint?
It's a fricking name. There have been HUNDREDS of shooting guards who weren't scorers, some of whom were also pretty bad shooters to boot.
The labels are/were more about size/body types than they were roles. When the game was new the names probably made sense, but have greatly evolved since then. Even in the 60s, and especially the 70s, those standard notions were changing.
And over the last few years the size/body type of the roles have been bending more and more. You have 6'6" guys playing center at times, and they don't always man the middle on either side.
Lonzo and Zion are the same height, for instance. Would you play Lonzo at PF or C or Zion at either guard spot?

Its a solid response. Its not about role to me, its about ability. Ball just hasn't ever gone off or thrived without the ball in his hands. I'm not saying it can't happen. But its a lot to ask of a guy in a contract year.
If we are just going with role players next to Ingram and Zion, why wouldn't Hart get that nod?

For reference to my shooting guard comment, Doug Christie, one of my favorite players, averaged 11 points over his career on only 43% shooting. He had a decent 3 at 35% but was definitely not known for his shooting.
You know what he was known for? Defense and pushing the ball up the floor when needed. Sound familiar?
Edit:
Looking more over it, I could see a similar path for Ball.
Christie's 3 didn't become good until his 4th year. Ball is already ahead of where he was. If he continues on an upward trajectory he could be just as good of a 3 pt shooter.
Ball's ppg is already ahead of where Christie was early in his career, although Christie didn't get a legit shot until he went to the Raptors.
Christie also wasn't the steal machine he was until he went to Toronto. Ball is already on a good path there.
If Ball can keep up the trajectory he's on, he could become a pretty good, if not great, 3 and D shooting guard with plus Ball handling skills and excelling on the fast break.
I'm really excited to see which way he goes this year. The potential is there, but can Van Gundy do a better job of coaching him up than Gentry did.

I think that’s the plan if Lonzo doesn’t work out, but I think they do want to see if Lonzo can play in the transition facilitator/half court shooter role first. That role is an ideal pairing with Zion.

Actually a good bit of Pels expected Ingram to do exactly what he did. Based on his high draft pick, his work ethic and more importantly, what he was able to show with the Lakers, after Bron was hurt and Ingram was the point forward-- post All Star Break.
Ingram was the centerpiece of that trade just like Tatum would have been. I fully expected Ingram to be an All-Star caliber player, LAST YEAR.
