Goldeneye: Greatest or Most Nostalgic Bond?

Rewatching on TV right now. It really isn’t a great movie, is it? I don’t think it is, but I can’t help but absolutely love it.
I guess being early 30’s it’s due to the video game on N64. I watch the movie and it instantly bring me back to that spilt screen greatness of the early 90’s.
ETA: The other Brosnan Bond films may have been better, but I don’t remember a single one of them like I do goldeneye.

I'll go to my grave saying it's the best all around Bond film ever made. (I'm also the same age and it's "my" bond movie, so I may be blinded)
I love elements of some of the Craig films, snd obviously the Connery originals are almost a genre of their own with the 60s camp, but Golden Eye has it all.
It has enough nostalgia and winks to the old bond, but holds its own with any 90s action film. Bronson was also perfect.
Perfect villains.
Perfect storyline (Soviets are always the best)
Perfect spy genre feel.
Perfect action.
Infinitely rewatchable.
... And figuring in the N64 game, it's legendary.

It’s the only post-Cold War James Bond film that works. Partly because the villains are former Cold Warriors turned mercs.
James Bond just doesn’t work without the undercurrent of Cold War paranoia.

Without the cold War, Bond is basically just another Mission Impossible film. Even great movies like Skyfall don't have the same feel when it's just generic bad guy/terrorist #12.
But when you link the Soviets and Eastern Europe, it's classic bond. Goldeneye did it all.

I think we overrate it because we grew up on the n64 game. It’s a good Bond movie, but it’s like 5-6th best if I’m honest.

I think it’s Brosnan’s best Bond film by far. It’s the only one that didn’t seem caricature of a Bond movie. Definitely a top 5 Bond movie.
It was directed by Martin Campbell, who also directed Casino Royale. You’d think they’d get him back for of them considering he’s knocked it out of the park both times.

Ehh I don’t think so. The Brosnan films were real stinkers.

Goldeneye is one of the better Bond films ever made and is certainly the best one Brosnan starred in. The subsequent video game definitely increased its popularity among those of us who were kids/teenagers in the mid and late-90s, but even without the game it was a solid entry to the franchise.

I watched Casino Royale last night, so I’m pretty sure you’re wrong on that.

What I’m about to say may be unpopular, but it’s true: Mission Impossible has now exceeded Bond overall in quality.

Its definitely not the best Bond movie. Brosnan goes too far into Roger Moore territory with the goofiness to keep it from the top. With that said, its top 5. Famke Janssen is a all time Bond Girl and Sean Bean is always a good bad guy. The movie didnt take itself seriously, but it also didnt become a farce like the rest of the Brosnan movies.

I cannot divorce the video game from the movie. I feel similar to The World is Not Enough even though it was mediocre as a Bond film. Loved the game so I loved the movie.

The tank scene is one of the greatest Bond set pieces of all time. Fight me.

That maybe true. However, the Mission: Impossible franchise has a finite shelf life because that franchise IS Tom Cruise. He'll eventually be too old to star in them and that'll be that. Bond will continue onward because the character of Bond is bigger than the actor who plays him.

It was my first Bond film and the video game that came out with it got me into the franchise. The only Bond movie I like more than it is Live and Let Die.
Brosnan was a great Bond with absolute dog shite writers outside of GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough

Okay, if I give you Casino Royals (which was directed by Goldeneye’s director Martin Campbell) was a good movie, at least concede that the story loses something when you transpose it from 1952 to 2006.
The smartest thing to do with Bond after Craig is to reboot the Bond franchise and have the films take place in the 50s/60s again.

Not Casino Royale. The villain merely being an arms dealer works for the story.

“For England, James?”
“No. For me.”
Also RIP to that big ole satellite dish

Goldeneye is at the top of my list. It’s the perfect bond movie even when you take nostalgia out of the equation, PB’s other entries pale in comparison. I think that Connery, Moore, and Craig are collectivity better bonds. Movies that give goldeneye a run for its money are: goldfinger, live and let die, the spy who loved me, the living daylights, casino royale, and skyfall. However goldeneye remains top of the pack and I don’t think any bond movie will ever change that, it’s just too good.
