How Do You Feel About the Homeless?

I think most of us, when we see a homeless person on the street corner begging, we wonder, “Why can’t they just get a job?” It’s easy to dismiss them and move on about our business. I try to keep in mind that someone could have a multitude of reasons for being homeless, but it’s easy to just think they don’t want to work and live off handouts. I feel addiction is the case more often than not.
My question for y’all is, how do you personally feel when you see a homeless person? Revulsion? Sympathy? Do you give them money or food, or even a job? Do you wonder how they got to be in that situation in the first place?

Mostly people with some sort of mental illness. Not a knock on them but it’s something that a lot of them can’t overcome.

I feel sympathy, but no empathy: I couldn't ever imagine letting myself get to that place. As long as I'm physically able there is work to be found.

i feel bad, but some of them wear better clothes and shoes than i do.
the ones with kids are the worst. i will give money to the lady and son on sherwood

I usually just assume they’re faking it and secretly driving back to their beach house after a days worth of panhandling.

Complete sympathy and compassion. You really never know anyone’s story.

I think ‘oh that’s sad. But I can’t help them all so I can’t help this one. That wouldn’t be fair’

I feel they should all move to California where the weather is consistently nice.

I'm willing to bet >90% of homeless battle depression, which typically means you are unwilling to help yourself.
And if you won't help yourself, it makes it difficult for others to help them

Depends on the homeless person. I've known junkies who had no desire to get help and had been on the same path since high school, and those people disgust me. I've also know vets who came home completely changed, fell on hard times as a result, and were desperately trying to get their lives back in order. Those are guys who deserve any support they can get, from both public and private sources.
In fairness, I guess in my younger years I was technically "homeless" for a month or two at a given time, but that was always by choice, and not a huge inconvenience

They are either
Mentally ill
On drugs
Running from the law
They choose to be homeless
It’s not that hard to understand

I think if you're talking about those folks begging at the stop lights, that there are too many fakers in the bunch and it hurts the folks who really need the help.

For my, sympathy. And I (wrongly to some) feel bad when I don't give even the change in my car. It's just my personality.
ETA and I wonder how it will affect judgment passed on me when my time comes.

There are exceptions, but the everyday panhandlers choose that way of life and are not really homeless.

No doubt. I just deal with a lot of both fairly regularly

I worked maintenance for a start up in a really bad neighborhood. After cleaning up human shite every morning for a year I have zero sympathy for the homeless. frick all of them

If they’re homeless due to drugs I don’t give a rats arse about them.
If they’re homeless due to mental health issues I feel for them.
If they’re homeless due to extenuating circumstances and are truly down on their luck then there are avenues to help them.
I don’t bother speaking with them to figure out which it is.

In L.A., it's an epidemic. You can't count them, there are so many and the city and state (regardless of what those mf-ing mouth pieces say) do jack shite about it. It's sad as so many are mentally ill and some just can't afford housing while a great deal of them are drug addicts and want to live that way. There are RVs all over the place and they trash up where ever they park. The public parks have tents. Vacant land turn into large encampments.
One of the issues is that the libs thought that rounding them up and putting them in institutions was a bad idea so they got rid of those. Then, you can't arrest them even if they commit a crime because it's not their fault they are in this predicament. BS!!
If they are literally living on the street, they need to be forcibly rounded up and put in institutions. Help them out with their issues.
Whatever you do, don't give them money. It just keeps them begging.
