Never been to that area but I hear it's beautiful. Heading there next week for 4 nights. Flying into MRY and will have a rental car. Staying at Ventana (all inclusive so meals are covered). Looking for other recommendations around the area. TIA.

Beautiful area. I would drive big sur south to the Coast Big Sur Cafe and stop and have a lunch or coffee the head back north. That's the prettiest part IMO. If you want a shorter drive then get south to the Big Sur Roadhouse for a stop the head back north. I like the beach in Santa Cruz too. In Monterey , the Monterey Fish House is more local, less tourist and really good.

Wife and I stayed at the Ventana at the end of September (we used Hyatt points). The hotel is really nice, and the area is beautiful. As it's your first trip to Big Sur, you'll probably enjoy spending a half a day driving HWY 1 and stopping at some of the lookouts.

You can make a day going to Point Lobos and walking around Carmel. There are plenty of places to stop and taste wine in Carmel if you like that. Similarly, you can go up into the Carmel Valley for some additional wine tasting options. We stopped in Carmel Valley "on the way" from MRY to have some wine for the room.

Closer to Ventana, Pfeiffer Beach is definitely worth a stop. It was closed when we were there a month ago because of fires, but it may be open now. Julia Pfeiffer, Pfeiffer Big Sur, and Andrew Molera State Parks are nice and have plenty of hiking options.

The hotel grounds are nice to. They have a guided hike that lasts like an hour. I wouldn't plan my day around it, but it's worth it if you'll be at the hotel and have open time in your schedule. Last, but not least, just enjoy some time relaxing on the property. You've got mountains all around you and ocean views in the other direction. It's a pretty cool place.

The restaurant Nepenthe has incredible views from the balcony. That's the one definite stop I would make. Lunch or early drink or dinner to catch the sunset

If you are interested in some spectacular whale watching I highly recommend Sanctuary Cruises Whale Watching. They are based out of Moss Landing which is a quick trip just north of Monterrey.

Vesuvio’s is a really good Italian place in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

It’s gorgeous, but don’t know how the fires affected it. We went in 2014 and ate at Ventana. Good food with a beautiful view! We also ate at the Hog’s Breath in Carmel by the Sea. Used to be owed by Clint Eastwood, it was so damn good and I highly recommend it. Also recommend going to Julia-Piffners state park. It’s beautiful! Have fun...

Isn't the coast road out there still closed due to a big landslide or something?

No, road has been open for past couple of years now.

The drive can become unpleasantly congested, esp on holiday weekends. I suggest starting out as early as possible so you can linger at the various stops.

some good recommendations already, but I don't think I saw one yet for the Monterey aquarium. Worth an afternoon
