The point is that Kate has been repressing and hiding this all these year and not told anyone. It's not that she had an abortion or miscarriage. It's a very important part of who she is and probably what led to her weight problem...she's hiding who she is behind the weight.
So after she fesses to Toby will she get off her arse and drop some weight? At this point it's visually appalling to look at her.

She's not on the screen for you to care about how she looks. I believe that originally her contract actually had some language in it about losing weight, but the cancel culture got involved and now it's not as strong language. I believe that's why she's not been shown in the future. The idea is that she does lose for the final death bed scene.
I think theoretically the Big 3 will work thru their issues and be a big, happy family when Rebecca dies.

is that what we're blaming her fatness this week?
You seem to be a bit of a homer for the show but come on 5 seasons in, her abortion probably would have come up at this point. Its showrunners out of ideas desperately trying to pull more flashback storylines.
Season 8....Kate suddenly recalls the time in college she got drunk and on her way to Taco Bell ran over and killed a guy..and this is why she stuffs her fat face now. Oh yeah the guy she ran over was also the father of the girl who's baby they are adopting

It's my favorite show on TV, currently. I lost my husband of 34 years the year before it came on TV. He was Jack in so many ways, both the good and the bad. So yeah...I don't mind being called a homer.
Chrissy Metz had issues with actually to having enough food as a child that led to her weight problems.
Anyway...I do enjoy the show. Of course, I don't think you can blame fatness on one thing, but it's obviously a lot involved when someone is that large. I work with someone like that and it's more than just put down the fork.
But yeah, I'm sure that's why the show will say she's fat.

Just popping in to say: I'm tired of the flashbacks. Now that we know what happened to Jack, I wish they would dial them back a bit. Every few episodes is fine, but I don't need one episode where it's modern day and then teen years and then them as babies.
I get they are explaining the story, but it doesn't need to be every episode. I don't need 10 minutes on how Jack forced Kevin to work out and be a football player.

Then you don't get the show at all. Everything in it is about parallels of the past, the present, or the future.
They showed that specific scene to show Kevin learning to not quit. He's putting in the work for this movie. He will probably win an Oscar for it.

quote:Exactly. I think they do a brilliant job of interweaving the flashbacks with the present, and I like each set of child actors who play them. The adolescent Kevin has really had a growth spurt, so that set of kids can’t really flashback further than they are now, if that makes sense.

That is my understanding, too. She was supposed to get gastric bypass surgery and the PC "Healthy at any Size" mafia came into the room screaming, so now they've convinced her that she's a beautiful "GURL", and being the size of a baby hippo is totally normal and medically sound.

No way they can pull that off without recasting Future Kate. The Lizzo addicts of the world will never let that happen. Besides, she was still fat in Randall's future fantasy of if he'd saved Jack from going back into the house.
In the pilot, she says the antidepressants she's been on since Jack's death is why she gained the weight.

I've never heard that, but if so, those are the first-est and whitest of first world, white girl problems.

They've never really said what made her morbidly obese. She was always overweight but may that set her off.
ETA: Although her 7th grade past self this season thinned out a bit.

Well what is it then? Because her personality is insufferable. Nothing about her is redeeming at this point.

She really is a miserable human being, and the least likable character on the whole cast.

I don't like her character overall in the show but I feel for her with that relationship with the scuz bucket boyfriend. Dude sucks and she was vulnerable at that age.

Teenage Kate is the least objectionable iteration of her character. Mark is a dirtbag of the highest order.

Agreed! She was even on board with getting the surgery and having the contract. But cancel culture...

Agreed that she's not likable on the show. However, I think that's part of the point. You don't like everyone in real life, do youj? I don't think it's expected that everyone be likable on this show.

He is. And he's just the kind of guy a teen girl with low self esteem falls for. She's exactly who they prey on.
