General Motors plans to spend $2 billion to convert its Spring Hill, Tennessee, assembly plant into a third U.S. site to build future electric vehicles.

The Detroit automaker also says it will spend another $153 million to upgrade five Michigan factories for future vehicles.

The company will build the Cadillac Lyriq, a small electric SUV, at the Spring Hill factory. Gasoline-powered Cadillac SUVs will continue to be built at the plant, and it will also get additional unspecified electric vehicles, GM said in prepared statement Tuesday.

“We're investing in U.S. manufacturing to ensure that GM can build the vehicles that customers love today as well as transition to an all-electric future,” Gerald Johnson, GM's executive vice president of global manufacturing, said during an online announcement. “We want to put everyone in an electric vehicle.”

The Lyriq is due in showrooms sometime late in 2022. GM also is expected to announce details of an all-electric GMC Hummer pickup truck this week. They’re among 20 electric models the company plans to sell globally by 2023.

How did Louisiana miss out on all of the car plants over the past 20 years? BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, Nissan.....all new factories spread out across all southern states except Louisiana and Arkansas.

Why would anyone invest into a state that tries to fleece Exxon (one of the few big employers) and is run by the likes of JBE and his attorney friends?

I would guess that blue collar wages are higher in Louisiana than some of the other surrounding states due to the chemical plant salaries. Operators, mechanics, electricians etc all make good money here and completion for staff is real.

That and out government is not good at courting business if it is not something that almost has to be here due to natural resources.

Look at how every metro area in LA treats businesses. You will find your answer.

Because our crooked politicians immediately want to start making demands on what they’re gonna get out of it (them, not the state). That scares away any possible deal that could ultimately benefit the state.

It’s almost as if companies don’t want to invest in a state with crumbling infrastructure, massive traffic, poor public schools, an unhealthy populace, corrupt politicians and subject to frequent hurricanes
