which gave 125 residents $500 a month for 18 months
WTF is $500/month supposed to do? Is this their idea of upward mobility? Libtard, feel-good, policy that will have little to no positive impact on those it’s supposed to help.

Well I'm not sure how much your car note is but that'd be a damn good boost to mine. I could upgrade

They are trying to provide data on what people use the money for as fuel against the "They are just going to use it for drugs and alcohol". But these small tests really don't provide useful data on the macro level impact of a UBI.
If someone takes their extra money and blows it all at the bar every month - that is fine from the macro intent as you want people to spend the money so it circulates in the economy.

Is that what you consider life changing? Is that
Going to increase or help your “upward mobility”?

No, but I could trade in my current truck for a platinum F250 and afford the note with that extra money. That's definitely what I'd do with it. Not sure why anyone would be expected to do different

Yeah others have probably said it but it's been really obvious to me that a large part of the reason democrats have been ok with lockdowns+ government aid checks in response to covid is because they see it as a dry run for the UBI plans they hope to implement.

Not gonna lie. 500/month is nice. I wish I just had an extra disposable $500, that income would be pretty nice.
But this only works if you're already working and have dependable income. But even still, some people are so absolutely terrible with money that they could work and be apart of this program and still not be in any better of a place than where they started

This is a great opportunity to address inequalities for Black and Brown people and also additional opportunities for upward mobility
So what happens if/when this doesn't work?

I don't think so - most of the democratic politicians all balked at UBI. Only fringe democrats like Yang and Gabbard expressed strong support for it. I think the other people that said they were open to it were just trying to siphon off some support from those two in the primary.

His plan was very well thought out and he was hands down the best candidate this year. What is going to happen is a lot of people are going to fight tooth and nail against change, and then we will get some terrible formation of UBI, potentially not Universal, not funded in a way where it benefits the largest number of people, etc.
Any society that just gives people money to exist and expects nothing else is doomed to have issues.
Lack of employment fuels crime rates.

Do we not already give the same people guaranteed income in the form of food stamps
Now they won’t have to sell their food stamp cards for drug cash, though. They’ll eat better and be healthier, and that will start a domino effect that will lead them to become self-sufficient citizens. Or not.

Paying lazy people to not work and have babies....isn't that sort of what caused the mess in Compton to begin with?

That is why it should not be at a level which gives people the ability to live a decent life and not work. Also, it should be crafted in a manner which will increase job opportunities.
LINK
That is a Forbes articled which discusses the likely impact on employment.
quote:
“It is reasonable to expect an unconditional cash transfer, such as a universal income, to decrease employment,” the authors say. “A key concern with a universal basic income is that it could discourage people from working, but our research shows that the possible reductions in employment seem to be offset by increases in spending that in turn increase the demand for more workers.”
The researchers found that the unconditional payments to residents had no real impact upon full-time employment levels (whether positive or negative), although they did find that part-time work increased by about 17%.
Certainly more research should be done and we have limited data to draw conclusions from at best. But just offhandedly discarding an idea because of a base level assumption is foolish.
Also - and again this needs to be universal as in everybody gets it, but the benefit to those people who would receive such a benefit, continue to work and use it to improve their lives would vastly outweigh those who would receive it, decide to not work for selfish reasons (there are good reasons someone could choose to not work fwiw, get more education, raising children, etc.).
