Drew rifle tags for Texas Nilgai

I put my wife and I in together and we both drew the Lower Rio Grande NWR - Teniente, Feb 4-7, 2021.
I am beyond pumped, the draw odds were stupid bad. I told one of my buddies in San Antonio and he said he has been applying for that particular hunt for 20 years, no success.
Has anyone hunted down there that can share any advice?
~6000 acres and everything have read says it is thick brush country. No motorized vehicle help, have to pack in and out everything. You can use a hand cart. I have a good mystery ranch pack so not too worried about carrying quarters out to the road. I am a little worried about snakes, but we have good snake boots. Ill shoot my .375 H&H and try to get her ready with a .30-06.

better plan to get there early and scout and be ready to bump in to other people and have them bump in to you.

Yeah, we are planning to take the entire week off for the scouting days prior to the hunt. I hope their arent too many folks out, not sure how many rifle tags are allotted. It's public though, so just part of the deal.
We are both still fairly young and in good shape so we plan to hike as far in away from the roads as we can, hoping others won't.

Damn thats way down there! Was fracing around there last year. Should have some cool weather to ward off the roaming snakes. I would be on the lookout when you sit somewhere to scout and take a break. They huddle and gather out of the wind and are looking for some sun possibly.
Sound like a awesome trip. Only thing I saw down there were javalinas (SP) and white tail. Oh and look out for possible border crossers. Never know

I went down a youtube wormhole one time and found videos on public land nilgai. Seems like decent amount of people have documented their experience on video.
I haven't watched very many of them but found this guys to be informative because he used a bike LINK
It looks like he's on a different property but still may be some useful content available to you searching what people put on youtube.

That's awesome. I ended up drawing the exotics (nilgai) at laguna atascosa a few years ago. Paid for the tag and ended up not being able to go. Huge regret with my decision. Hope you end up going.
I read a lot about it and it sounds like the hunts down there are very difficult. Sandy soil and all walking/biking. Read quite a few people bring their mountain bikes with the wide tires to get in further and away from people.

Buy a couple of e-bikes with trailers and get way in there.

Those are some tough SOBs,,,,,that 375 should be plenty, I’d load the -06 with some heavy rounds and you should be fine.

How the heck you supposed to pack one out?

Keep shooting until the animal isn’t moving at all or has disappeared from sight. Absolutely the toughest animal to kill on the N American continent and I don’t believe it’s even close.

Quarter it out and pack it. They also say you can use a game cart as long as it’s not motorized.

I live about 2 hours north of there. You shouldn't have to worry about snakes in early February. I've put in for that hunt the past 8 years myself. Best of luck to you, oh and they taste horrible so I will give you my address so you can just drop off the meat at my house.

Nilgai burgers, Nilgai steaks, nilgai kabobs, roasts, fried, jerky, meatballs, tacos, chili, stroganoff, sausage......and on and on. Those are some big critters.
