Question about LSU RB from the 90s

There was a running back from my hometown of Homewood, AL that came to LSU back in the 90s. I think he would've been a freshman in 1994. I'm pretty sure his name was Robert Johnson and I remember watching him do pretty well his first game against Texas A&M. I do know that he eventually left for UAB. Just wondering if anyone remembers this guy and knows why he left.

I think it was Robert Davis, and I don't know why he left.

Part of that Robert(?)Tumor, Jermain Sharp, Robert Davis stable of backs. Wow! We thought that was a stable of backs?

they were an outstanding bunch and VERY highly recruited. unfortunately, they entered the Hallman zone and Haffner & Co. ruined them.
A perfect example of what bad coaching can do.
Robert Davis came in around 1992.

Robert Davis, "Mr Football" in Alabama in 1991. Announced choosing LSU over Alabama on live TV in Birmingham and the Tide fans went nuts.
The guy was amazing in HS. His 'problem' was he could accelerate from his stance as well or better than anyone. No one could hit the line faster than him. In HS, if he got a seam,he was off to the races. Problem was he wasn't 'SEC fast' as a RB and could get brought down from behind. Case in point ,in his freshman debut in 1992 against A&M,he hit the line and ,bam, took off 50,60,yards,but an Aggie LB drug him down from behind.
Guy bounced around at UAB and got into some trouble and was kicked off the team.

Yes,and Artie Moore from Wiggins (Dizzy Dean's hometown) was Mississippi's Mr FB. Jay Johnson from Waco was either 'Mr Football' in Texas,or Mr 5-A.

Not sure. Toomber did have a pretty good career, and had a big game in the upset in Tuscaloosa in 1993.

That is the play that epitomizes Robert Davis. I was there and he was running towards me in the South End Zone. It was a pitch from Ryan Huffman that ANY of our current day backs would have scored on. And you're right; he got caught from behind by a LB.

Curley had a great first recruiting class - I think we were all looking forward to getting back on top - just goes to show, it takes much more than just good players on the squad to make a championship team.

Wasn't David Butler a part of that class?

I knew a Southern Miss QB from Homewood in the late 90s early 00s. Brian Blazcik (sp?)

I think with that many losses, it had to be a lot of both.

I was in school when that freshman class of running backs came around. I always liked Robert Davis... For that reason, I beleive that the #5 LSU jersey looks the best. Silly, but he's really the only player for whom I look at a number and remember FIRST the player who wore that number when I was in school.

My favorite Toomer highlight is when he was standing outside of Sports and I fight broke out between my friends and some other dudes. Somehow in the middle of the fight Toomer's sweater got ripped by on of the other guys. I remember eveything standing still for about 5 seconds and Toomer said "my grandma got me this sweater" and kicked that dude's arse. It was great.
