That’s a big problem though. Alabama is thinking about “how many championships can I win?” while according to you, LSU players are happy with one. Sucks if that’s the mentality of the team.

“Alabama” the program may think that, but not the players. That’s super naive. I’m sure there are more than a few guys that being significant contributors on a championship team matters. So they do come back to try to win one as starters. But none of those dudes with early round NFL talent are sticking around trying to just collect rings.

And we didn’t just win the NC last year, we went 15-0 and are widely considered the greatest college football team of all time. That’s not just a “regular” NC. It’s the literal peak of CFB. I’m sure it pushed a couple guys who may have been on the fence to the declare. And combined with COVID, made it easier for Chase, Shelvin, and Vincent to opt out.

It was just the “perfect” storm that led to this particular mass exodus. shite happens. And, to me, last season made it all worth it. The dudes who really kinda hosed this 2020 team, though, are the guys who came back so fat and out of shape. But they’re young, and that’s human nature.

This year will suck, but I think the players will get better. Schedule is hard, so record might not reflect it. I do worry that O made a terrible hire in Pelini, and Woodward gave him an even worse contract(for LSU) that basically makes him unfireable for at least 2 years. Not sure about the offensive hires yet, but I do worry the age of the staff may affect recruiting. If we go 3-7, and a bunch of dudes start de-committing, it could get scary.

The o my two guys that left that shouldn’t have were Philips and Shelvin/Vincent opting out.

All the guys that went pro are having successful rookie campaigns. D-Lew, Cush, Queen are all starting. Chiasson is getting tons of snaps and might be starting. Not sure

Most of LSU's run defense would have been solved with Shelvin back in the middle and anchor of defense.

Shelvin opting out made no sense. He was nowhere near a first round pick yet. One solid season and he could have been. Chase is understandable but he still would’ve been a first round pick had he played. Barring some freak injury.

The truth is that bama can get the quality that they want at every position they need every year. If Saban perceives that his OL depth is waning, he goes and gets all of the 4-5* OL that he needs. O can't do that. He can go and get players at the positions that he needs, but some will be lesser talents that are projects, and the ones who pan out may take a couple of years to develop Some won't pan out at all. It's an unlimited talent pool versus a good talent pool. This is why bama doesn't miss a beat, but we have ups and downs.

I expected this thread to be awful, but while “one reason” is probably overly simplistic... there is certainly truth here.

The pay talk is ridiculous. If you don’t think LSU plays just as dirty as Bama in recruiting or just in general then you are naive. That is such a tired worn out excuse as to why Bama is a better program. The only reason Bama is a better program is because they have Nick Saban and we don’t. We were able to finally beat them last year with a historic QB and offense and basically an NFL roster. The RTWFU was premature in my opinion.

Bama just has crazy depth and a bunch of talented guys who could Increase their draft stock greatly with another years

There is no altruism there.
correct. It has nothing to do with wanting championships for the players, with rare exception.

It's about where they go in the draft, and whether they think another year in college would improve their stock enough to justify it.

It's that simple.

People get all pissy every time I say it but you can't market your football program as "NFLSU" and then get upset when players leave early for the NFL

Hahaha. The reason those guys are coming back is money. Bama pays them more than we do. These guys are players, not fans. Fans have nothing to weigh against the glory of gridiron success. The players have money to weigh against it.

Just ask yourself this: if you had a 100% chance for five million dollars right now, or play a year of college football for free, and IF you don't get hurt, you get five million dollars next year. What would you do? Add to that you are dirt poor with no chance at a college education and with no marketable job skills.

This is what makes Saban so good. He organizes the wealthy fans to create a "special" club that serves a "special" purpose.

They lose tons of underclassmen too, Saban does a great job getting backups experience and making sure they prepare like starters.

So they’re ready when it is their time.

What good does "Ready" and "Prepared" and "Learned the Plan" do when there is no Plan and nobody to Instruct how to get there if there was one?

Championship.

Of course..... as is OSU who Day thinks will be a once in a lifetime team. !st round picks Shaun Wade and Wyatt Davis opted out but immediately opted back in when the B1G resumed play. According to them it is a bust year if they don't win the natty.

if you think that, you are very young and foolish. Players don't care about championships more than they do about a million dollars. Players don't care about championships nearly as much as you think.

Negative. They fear recourse from the Bama alumni in power all over the U.S... and probably take a pay cut going to the NFL.

100% if they don't get approved to leave early, their NFL psych evals just happen to tank, stories of violence get released.

I don’t care who we do or don’t have on the field, our defense should be on par with Kentucky at least, don’t you think?
