re: Does "House" with Hugh Laurie ever alter the formula? (Spoilers)

Every episode House thinks it’s Lupus and it only ever is like once.
Regardless, it’s one of my favorite shows ever. A great one to turn on and fall asleep to as well.
I think he usually said it’s never Lupus.
The groups interactions figuring out the case are what drove series more than the case (which would make it hard to binge watch). House’s and Wilson’s personalities and relationship drew on Holmes and Watson.

Does Foreman ever leave? Omar Epps character? I could kind of do without him.
Halle Berry did such a good job tutoring him in The Program that about 10 years later he was not just a doctor but a near brilliant diagnostician. He could barely read in The Program.

Agreed. Although it was House and Wilson’s relationship that was my favorite. As much as House thinks that Wilson is beneath him, Wilson is the one that keeps him grounded for the most part. Or the only one that can keep him in check underneath his snarky, egotistical personality

One doesn't really watch House for the plot.
They watch it for House shitting on everyone intellectually.
It never gets old because Laurie plays the cantankerous smarter than you a-hole so well.
There are several two-parter episodes and kind of stand-aloneish episodes that are very, very good though. Very good.
shite. The episode with Dave Matthews (I'll admit I love his music. The earlier stuff anyway, and the stuff that doesn't get the radio play) as a pianist was fantastic.

How do you feel about the special effects watching now?
I remember watching it when it first came out and people were always amazed at the effects/cgi level for a TV show at the time. I wonder how that holds up

It's funny, but watching A Bit of Fry and Laurie on Netflix has resulted in me starting House from the beginning. Fry and Laurie both would have fit well into a Python type show.
And Laurie is fantastic in House. I'm up to late Season 5. You are right about the formulaic aspect of it, it's become almost comical by now. They are not going to get the correct diagnosis until at least 45 minutes have passed. The patient will likely be defibrillated, intubated, have a CAT scan, liver failure, kidney failure, the same weird diseases get thrown around all the time (Wilson's Disease, Sarcoidosis,...). I hardly pay attention to the medical stuff for most of the show because it's pointless. It's the story lines outside of the medicine that are interesting.
I do think that the first two seasons were the best. House starts to just be an arse after that, and some of the changes in his support staff just seem silly. It was pretty impressive that they cranked out around 25 episodes per season.
I did like the 2 part finale, so before giving up it's worth watching that.

I watched about 6 episodes with the GF. I joked that the MRI Machine should have been nominated for an Emmy.

Not to mention that after that, he killed himself by jumping in front of a train.

They had some episodes that were classics (Ugly) that bucked the trend a bit, but yeah it was very formulaic. Huge House fan.

How long would House last in an actual hospital these days?

I've watched some of Fry and Laurie recently as well. What I was struck by was just how much Laurie was doing John Cleese in it! It was almost an impersonation. I was struck thinking that if anyone would have wanted to do a remake of A Fish Called Wanda (I hope no one would btw) you could ave cast Hugh Laurie in the Cleese role.

Considering he takes up the time of 6 doctors to solve 1 case over two weeks...Cuddy would have him fired after week 1.

Really though, it's more about the characters than the medical mystery du jour.
This. The show wouldn’t have had worked half as well if the house/Wilson dynamic didn’t have the same chemistry behind it.
