Never pay kids for grades, period

What are you, a socialist or academic who thinks work should be free?
Reward for successful effort and good choices is what fuels this country. Kids need to get this message early.

My kid had NEVER made anything but an A in school. Guess I don’t know what I’m doing....

I did some quick napkin math and was able to understand what this means, and I realized that I also have a similar situation.

My brother took it upon himself to offer her $1000 from me if she gets all A's.
Lol. Not only would I have gotten in the car to go actually kill him, my girl would be checking the route for hazards and alerting me so I would get there as fast as possible.
Family is cool and whatever I guess, but I remove myself from all that shrapnel drama by declining the daily/weekly check in meeting requests. I don’t care.

I offered my nieces each $100 if they got a 4.0 their senior year of HS.
Paid out $400

Open an IRA for her if she gets all As and buy her 10 shares of AAPL

I like this.
Especially because the only value of the cash prize is to build an incentive of working hard gives you rewards.
I imagine the shitty brother will find some way to get his hands on and mooch from the 1k and leave the kid bitter about it.

It is totally not aboot the $1000. It is aboot your brother thinking your money is community money, and he is in charge of disbursement.
Tell him since he feels you get to decide what the other does, you have set him up to suck the dick of the grocery store manager next Tuesday.

I politely said. "I'm not doing that. If you choose that's a nice gesture from you".
That’s how I’d play it.

You should offer 10k since you're so loaded.

Well that escalated quickly.
Those expired coupons must have had some killer deals.

If you give a 14 year old a thousand in cash with mom struggling to get by, chances are mom ends up with a portion of the money. She’ll simply “borrow” it until it’s gone.

Yep.
Or more likely, force the kid to buy for herself things that would otherwise be provided.
Including essentials like school uniforms, etc

My stepsister doesn't make much, knocked up by a shithead. Her 14 y.o. daughter is a nice kid. Doing well. HS sophomore. My brother took it upon himself to offer her $1000 from me if she gets all A's.
Your brother is married to your step sister? Or your brother offered your money to your niece who is also his niece by way of your step sister?
Either way I’d tell you brother to go frick himself

Cut the guy a break. Sounds like a responsible drinker who’s learned his lesson. Also would like more context on the money. You’re prob over exaggerating the situation.

I don’t even think it’s a good idea necessarily to pay kids for grades.

yes, I’m sure she (and her friend) will forever cherish the memories of being 16 and taking a “really nice” vacation alone with her totally not creepy step-uncle
