Is is worth it to seek a medical diagnosis if I believe I suffer from shoulder impingement? I've had ROM pain in my right shoulder for years, maybe a decade. I don't lift but even something like push-ups causes aggravation. I can throw a baseball but not really from a wind-up, more of a modified above-the-ear motion.

Should I go see an orthopedist, or skip straight to PT?

Yes. You will get an x-ray then they will recommend PT. If PT doesn't help, you will probably get an MRI to see the extent of the damage. Those impingements are the worst!

I would go to the orthopedist and see what they say. Might be bursitis or something else as well. I had some sort of impingement for a month or two, went to the ortho, they wanted an mri of my neck but only if the steroids they gave me didn’t help. They helped and I’m in no pain. Had been radiating tingling numbness to my fingertips kinda like sciatica. So who knows? The x ray might reveal something or be inconclusive. An MRI is really the only way you’ll probably know much about the structure of the shoulder. Nevertheless they might help with a scrip and referral to PT which will hopefully help. But if it’s bugging you, go see the guys who will actually look at your shoulder structure first to determine what’s wrong and then go to PT to help fix the structure if that’s what will help.

Frankly, the cheapest way may simply to have your PCP refer you to a place to get an MRI on the shoulder so you don’t have to pay for x rays and multiple specialist visits.

Go to a PT, not a chiro. They can diagnose your impingement without expensive scans

I had impingement in the right shoulder while playing senior league baseball. After a 3” long needle with a corto-steroid found the bursa sac And relieved the pain, I immediately started a series of 17 exercises. Following about a month of daily exercises, I was good to throw again.
