I need to step up my game lol, seriously 308, have two love them both. Easiest ammo to find , dosent kick much(5-3 girlfriend kills deer with it), and almost perfect out to 300 or so, if you want to sling lead further you can, I’ve punched paper out to 1000 with one, but it’s about out of gas at that range

.308 is fine. 6.5 is just a better choice.

Credemore is getting a bum rap in this thread. I'm 100% recovery with mine.
Any centerfire above 22 works with the right bullets and a straight shot.

For shooting paper.. not killing deer. Such an underwhelming round

308 you'll absolutely fall in love with that round

Both are more than adequate. Maybe you need to improve your shooting skills or experience?

Killed plenty of deer with the 6.5. Which is why i have real data on the round on deer. I just prefer not to trail them 300yds on double lung shots. The 6.5 is a novelty round. After using it 3 yrs it wont leave the safe unless shooting paper. 308 shits all over it

Maybe with all of the "long range hunting" shite loads that are out there. There are so many better options than all of this long range miracle juice being used. A 140 or 156 grain 6.5mm soft point out the barrel around 2600fps is a long proven recipe for making big game dead.

Not saying it wont kill deer. I killer deer with it. Hell ive killed tons of deer with a 100gr 243 also. Doesnt mean it better than a 270..But if you are asking me which to get for deer hunting (like the op did) its 308 and it isnt close.

Except they are both really, really close to eat other in every measurable there is.
I hate on the creedmoor as much as anybody, but I've been killing deer with a 6.5x55 my whole life. I've never had a bullet fail to exit, never had any kind of mystery performance issues, just lots of dead deer. A 140gr 6.5 soft point is a really really good deer whacker. The only thing I can figure is people are shooting target bullets or taking bad shots.

What bullet did you use? Never had to do much tracking with the 6.5.

Buy a 30-06 and be done with it.
But I really like taking my sons 7mm08 when he doesn’t go with me.

That’s what I have said for years. Same reason you don’t hear of people crying about poor performance from 7mm mag 30-30 7mm 08 and a slough of other cartridges, it’s because they are not available at academy In “match bullets”
A 130-150 grain proper designs bullet moving almost 3000fps will F some deer up if you place the shot

I believe you are correct. Theres no reason it shouldn't be a really good whitetail round. Maybe the owners can't shoot because their thong wedgie is too tight?
