The tax issue is the biggest nothingburger as far as "October surprises" go

Unless you are a mouth breathing window licker, there is no way this means anything to you other than Trump takes advantage of the lawful accounting allowed to him as should everyone.
He's been doing it his whole life and apparently the IRS has never had an issue with it even after numerous audits over the years.
It's to distract from Hunter, Joe calling troops stupid and the debate and those that already hate Trump will eat it up. This isn't swaying any undecideds and certainly isn't changing any of his current support.

Wouldn;t it be illegal for anyone to actually have his tax returns in the first place? I'm struggling with how the NYT can throw this out there, fail to cite sources or provide details, and then people accept it as the holy grail.

Always knew DEG was stupid, but wow. Obviously doesn't understand how taxes, and in this case, refunds work.

Remember that you are referring to the propaganda wing of the DNC, and not real journalists. As such, they can create any “October surprise” supported by “a reliable anonymous source”.
The young man shot in the back of the head at that Philadelphia laundromat? That was Trump in a hoodie pulling the trigger. A “reliable source” has confirmed it.

The tax argument was a prime example of how stupid dem voters are. They thought his federal tax returns would be a multi page confession of his criminal acts and Russian scandals.

It only proves he’s smarter than all the idiots who are complaining how lilttle he paid. He literally found a legal way to pay virtually no income tax.
