Today is a special day, as we welcome some of the most accomplished studios in the games industry to Xbox. We are thrilled to announce Microsoft has entered into an agreement to acquire ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks. As one of the largest, most critically acclaimed, privately held game developers and publishers in the world, Bethesda is an incredibly talented group of 2,300 people worldwide who make up some of the most accomplished creative studios in our industry across Bethesda Softworks, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios. These are the teams responsible for franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, DOOM, Dishonored, Prey, Quake, Starfield and many more.

I hope this doesn't mean Elder Scrolls and Fallout will be xbox exclusives now. Between this and them trying to acquire WB games it looks like they're actually trying to improve, which is good to see.

I'd think there would be too much money to lose by making them exclusive, but I've been wrong before. I think the bigger thing is that all of these games are on Game Pass day, which is a huge selling point for Xbox.
Nice avi change, sic.

doubtful. i think they're leaving too much money on the table by making it completely exclusive. the amount of money that would go in Xbox's pocket from PS5 game sales would surely be greater than the additional consoles/GP subs they would sell solely for those games. we'll probably see day 1 on gamepass for a while and then PS5/PC down the road

I hope the games don't become exclusive to Xbox/PC. And this is coming from a huge Elder Scrolls fan that plays exclusively on Xbox. I don't see these games being kept off of PlayStation/Switch as something that would be healthy for the video game industry.
Nevertheless excited to see what comes of this. There were rumblings of corporate Zenimax holding Bethesda Game Studios back.

Come on, did Microsoft spend $7.5 billion to not make all of these games exclusives?

the industry is trending that way. i cant wait for the day someone buys Take Two and makes GTA exclusive just so i can enjoy the ensuing butthurt

you would think, but I'd bet that they make more money having them as multiplats. hard to make back 7.5B and fund 100MM games with just console sales and $15/mo GP subscriptions when people don't have to buy the games. im sure they'd appreciate the millions of $60 sales they'd get from PS5 game sales
the community seems pretty split on what they expect MS to do.

I wonder if Microsoft would put out a remastered version of New Vegas with all the bugs fixed. I think Bethesda didn't want to do it because they didn't want to work with Obsidian.

I'm not saying they will make the games exclusive, but why would any AAA game be an exclusive then? Wouldn't Naughty Dog/Sony have made tons more money if Last of Us was on Xbox and other platforms?

probably, but Naughty Dog has always been PS only and sony has always been less open about letting their games off their console (save for PC games coming years later)
Fallout and ES have rabid fanbases on both consoles already and MS is much more open to everyone, hence their commitment to PC and their willingness to embrace crossplay.
just spitballing here, they may make everything hard exclusive day 1. i just think the Fallout and ES are too big of properties to ignore the PS5 market. I get both consoles anyway so I'm not worried, and all the shooters I'll probably get on PC
wonder if this means we'll have to use Xbox's shitty PC app to launch games? doubt they'll put everything on Steam/Gog

Phil Spencer came out and said Deathloop and Ghostwire will be honored as PS exclusives. But all future Bethesda games will be evaluated for non Xbox consoles on a "case by case basis."

But Microsoft's profitability isn't solely based on Xbox. They have the funds to keep this long term investment going.
Microsoft is going to keep them as exclusives to increase demand for game pass. At least for right now.

at people in this thread who were praising Sony for the tactic of creating exclusives and how much value that adds to PS5 who are now saying it would be a bad move for MS to make these games exclusives due to loss of revenue.

that's about right, gives them room to do analysis and see which properties would maximize profits from multiplatting. I'd expect the megaproperties (ES, Fallout, Doom) to all get timed exclusivity to xbox and then PC/PS5 after. Deathloop and Ghostwire are timed exclusives anyway so that's not too big a deal for MS

Fallout and ES are far bigger properties than any Sony exclusive.

I really hope they stick it to Sony and make it all Exclusive, but they won't.
I'm tired of the exclusivity game and that is Sony's bread and butter. Someone has to shut it down. There is no reason that all of these platforms can't have access to the same games. Such a waste.
