Opinion: Series-S is the absolute steal of the generation

Assuming that Microsoft doesn’t go an entire generation without exclusives outside Fable, Gears and Halo, I honestly believe getting a S-S is a great investment for people who are in between serious and non-serious gaming. Was looking at specs and everything between consoles and given the current technological environment, I really don’t think at the current moment, people care as much about rendering high fidelity games on an expensive TV as much as smooth frame rates and the ability to just enjoy their favorite titles without any problems on the surface level.
That being said, I believe the Series X will sell more at the beginning of the new generation but ultimately be outsold by Series S for a few reasons. I believe Microsoft is only putting out the X strictly for their exclusives. Even though it is a knock on microsoft, for what exclusives they will have such as fable, another gears and the obvious new Halo, I think that’s what they’re specifically making the console for. They’re optimizing the console strictly for the exclusives and anything else is window dressing as far as the other devs go like Naughty Dog and Ubisoft etc. So the S, for lack of a better word, I guess you could say is their “casual” console. Without turning your processor into an omelette, I believe you’d find it pretty hard to make a low grade custom PC with Series-S performance for the price of a base Switch to be honest. You can knock on the exclusives all you want but I’ll be damned if the Series-S isn’t a love letter to people who are on a budget or aren’t Nintendo/Sony people. Or even those who are and want game pass instead of Sony’s streaming service.
Also to note, it’s not like they’ll ever just take games off their library either. They’ll only ever keep adding games whether it be exclusives, gamepass or general multiplats.

Hmm, not sure about that. It's just so weak.
If you are that casual of a gamer and don't care about ray tracing why would you go spend $300 on something with less power than a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X from a generation ago? They'd just stay on those.

Why do you say it has less power? Just because it doesn't output 4K? It does enhance backwards compatible games in other ways the OneX does not.The CPU and SSD are definitely better than current gen. If you are like me and have at least a years worth of current gen games you want to play through in 4K and have a OneX than I can understand not upgrading to an S. But if you don't have an XBOX or still have an OG One or One S and want to start next gen gaming on a small budget than the S is a decent deal especially bundled with Game Pass.

Because the GPU is literally less powerful than both the PS4 Pro's and XBoneX.

You do realize the Zen 2 Cores in the Series S blow away the Jaguar cores in the One X and that will make a huge difference in next gen game.

Consoles are GPU bound in game.

The Series S will be fine until devs start to max out the Series X then it'll be like the base Xbox One. The worst platform possible to play games on and holding back the most powerful system at the same time.

I think this generation will finally be the one generation where all 3 companies are actively competitive with another without a clear front runner. Wii generation was close but it will be interesting to see.

You're right, but the PS fanbois on this board will downvote you like crazy for it.

Nah you Xbox fanbois just can't handle the truth is all. You couldn't last gen either though so nothing new.

I don't think fanboyism has anything to do with praising the system for what it is...a decent budget next gen system for casual gamers. Maybe that will prove to be a small niche IDKIm not impressed with specs either and personally I'd roll with a PS5 digital at the moment since already have a OneX and it has enough grunt to play games for another year.. But to say that the Series S doesn't offer anything more than a OneX or PSPro just doesn't make sense to me.

It may prove to be problematic. Some developers have chimed in with concerns. But I do wonder what other reduced spec consoles the Sony exec was referring too.

Beyond the one they rejected?
Jim Ryan: Sony rejected the idea of a less powerful PS5 in the style of the Xbox Series S

Yes. He said the history of games business. I thought he was referring to other released consoles. Maybe he meant the development is problematic IDK...
