How would Cuties compare to a movie like Kids? 11 year olds over sexualized in society and on screen vs 15-16 year olds engaging in overt sexual acts and drug use? Both movies had actors that were actually the same age as the characters they were portraying. 16 is obviously way different than 11 but full on overt sexual activity is also way different than suggestive dancing. BIG uproar around Kids back in the day.
I think Kids and requiem for a dream are good comparisons.
how do you criticize something in a movie without showing what you're critical of? that's the dilemma for cuties. One difference between cuties and kids is the pedophilia concern. What might disgust me, or any normal person, is a turn-on to others.
I think the major issue is how Netflix marketed the movie. the movie poster implies a glorification.

Exactly...pedophiles were turned on by "Home Alone" and nobody wanted that movie banned.
I did not think it was a good movie...I thought it went a bit far with some of the camera shots (you could have made the same point without going to that extreme)...but, young girls dealing with puberty are bombarded with hypersexualized messages all the time.
Instead of trying to ban it...parents should use it as a teachable moment. Discuss their bodies and changes to come.
Not to mention the main character is faced with an ultra conservative family life at home.

I agree
I don't Think Netflix did anything to avoid the controversy. They actively fed into it.
