Change my mind...

Do you want your mind changed?

Greatest actor of our time is debatable, argumentative, and opinion but I do believe it is clearly acceptable that he is one of the greats of our time and is worthy of the discussion.

I've really only seen the guy in 2 movies, "The Fighter" where he plays Dick Eklund, the drug addicted, irresponsible half brother of boxer Mickey Ward and then in "Ford vs Ferrari" where he played Key Miles, the mechanic/driver instrumental in Carrol Shelby's effort to build a race car capable of beating out Ferrari at LeMans".
He was excellent in both of those playing a pretty loathsome character in "The Fighter" and a flawed, but all-around good guy in "Ford vs Ferrari".

He is undeniably excellent but the answer is DDL without question.

You haven't seen Empire of the Sun? I suggest watching that, regardless of this thread.

DDL is an amazing actor but he is in so few movies compared to say Lionardo DiCaprio or Christian Bale. It is not really fair to compare based on lack of output

Fair argument.

I'll put it on my "Need to see" list. I know there's a shite ton of DDL fans and he's made some good movies, but some of them simply bore the pants off me.

If you edit that to greatest of his generation of actors, you’re probably right.
An extensive and very diverse library and not many misses. At least as far as his acting goes. His only competition is The Pittster or Leo.

Philip Seymour Hoffman would have been the correct answer

There are roles in which I thought Tom Hardy was on par with Bale, but then he delivered some duds, especially is voice acting.
Why can’t a director keep him in check when it comes to his voice. How many roles has he played where he you can’t understand his character?
Bane in The Dark Knight Rises
John Fitzgerald in The Revenant
Capone in Capone
Any others I’m missing?
And yet, I thought he was outstanding in these roles:
Bob in The Drop
Eames in Inception
Max in Mad Max: Fury Road
Ivan Locke in Locke
I think he still has the potential to be one of the greats. Nevertheless, Christian Bale is an outstanding actor.

I actually thought he stole the show in that movie.

I agree, except for the fact that you couldn’t understand half of what he said.
It’s a testament to his acting that you knew what he was saying by his body language, facial expressions, and his inflections without actually knowing the words flowing from his tongue.

Top 3-5.
American Hustle and 3:10 to Yuma also stand out as flawed but great roles.
But really, show me a role he didn’t do excellent in.

If this bothers you, then whatever you do, do not watch the TV series Taboo.
