A Lake Charles man who was hospitalized with severe carbon monoxide poisoning died Thursday, joining four of his family members who shared his tragic fate when a generator they set up during Hurricane Laura filled their house with poisonous fumes.

John Lewis, 70, along with his wife, Rosalie, 81, their daughter, and two other relatives were unable to leave their home ahead of the hurricane due to medical issues and decided to wait out the storm.

Family members say all five hunkered down and survived the fierce winds that shredded their neighbors' homes but largely spared theirs.

Hours after the storm passed, four of them died when the generator they set up in the garage filled the home with poisonous fumes. When emergency crews arrived, John Lewis was the only person still breathing.

Relatives said he was brought to a hospital in Alexandria and had been in critical condition.

Authorities have said fumes from a generator they set up in the garage entered the home through an open door. The door the family left open in the garage had closed but relatives said they are unsure sure how the door to the house opened while the generator was running.

PSA: You can get carbon monoxide detectors for your home.

My 48 year old neighbor with his lifted/expensive waste of money rims/tinted truck had a generator in his garage too. Complete moron.

You can get fire detectors that also detect CO so you aren't having to double up on the detectors.

So leaving it in the garage running in the garage with the door open is still a problem?
What about putting a box fan close to it to force fumes out the garage door?

Obviously having the garage door closed would be a no-no.

I assumed it was a door from the garage to the house, not the outer garage door. I imagine that would be fine since the exhaust has to go somewhere and it would go outside (although I still wouldn't want to do it).

But why? Why take a chance? Put the damn thing out in the open , if it rains ..... it gets wet, so what?

Well it is electrical. My neighbor had one running in his garage over night but it was near the opening and the garage door was open.

Had some family members almost die from one that was on the tongue of a trailer they were sleeping in on a trip. Out in the open, but the exhaust was seeping under the trailer and getting in somewhere. One of them woke up with a bad headache and woke everybody else up. Don’t set it up right next to the house even if it’s an open area. Don’t think it can only be a problem in a closed in space. Get monitors.

I’ll set mine up right behind my truck, out in the driveway and drop the tailgate for rain cover. It can get a little wet, just not soaked.

20 feet away from any doors and windows at minimum with exhaust facing away from the dwelling.
