I know music is subjective but it boggles the mind that The Strokes caught much more critical and fan acclaim than Interpol back in the early 00's.

The Strokes "This Is It" wasn't a bad album. I never felt it lived up to the hype, though. A few catchy songs, nothing super inventive or challenging. Just a "meh" album, imo. It came out in April of 2001.

August 2002 brought us Interpol's "Turn on The Bright Lights", from another NYC-based band. While I give credit to The Strokes for giving NYC rock music an 'in' in pop culture, Interpol's album was head and shoulders above "This is It", imo. Yes, it's very heavily influenced by Joy Division but, christ, it's such a great album from front to back. It feels like it has meaning, deep grooves, just good emotionally stimulating music.

It kills me to hear people talk about The Strokes like they were some icon of rock in the early 00's while Interpol is basically only credited by fans of the band and a few critics.

Interpol’s first record blows anything the Strokes have recorded out of the water.

I like both for different reasons. the guitar playing on is this it RIPS. antics for me was a better album than turn on the bright lights though. I can listen to that record over and over.

I do too, but I agree. “Is This It” is very good, “Turn On the Bright Lights” is monumental.

Interpol should be just as big as The Strokes and more highly regarded imo

strokes had better "hooks" in their songs so of course they appealed to a wider audience

The Strokes are more interesting to me. I get why people like Interpol, but I can't make it through one of their records without getting bored.

Interpol first 3 records >>> any of the Strokes ones

Strokes overall has been more consistent. Interpol just can't find that magic anymore. There's a good song here or there, but other than that they all are very flat

Whatever you do, don't listen to the Paul Banks and RZA album from a couple of years back. I couldn't even get through the whole thing it was so bad. I think Banks is just out of ideas.

Didn't even know this existed. I loved his first solo record. You can hear his creativity outside of the Interpol style. His followup was good not great.

I agree though. It does appear his ideas have been tapped out.

I just read an interview of Joe Talbot from IDLES and he said he wants "The Rat" played at his funeral. I thought that was a very high compliment of that song considering how good IDLES are.

Bows + Arrows may be The Walkmen's best work.
