Yeah The Rat is GOAT.

One of the saddest and most powerful songs I’ve heard in years is Idles’ “June”

I love both Interpol and IDLES. I have seen both of them play in small venues. The IDLES' performances blew my mind.

Do yourself a favor and see them if they play near you.

Also, shout out to The Walkmen. Bows + Arrows GOAT

Are you the guy in the "listening to now" thread who mentioned "The Rat"?

I used to absolutely love that song but hadn't even thought of it in years until seeing that post. I've listened to it 3 times tonight. Such a great song.

ETA: It was a dude named 'The Seaward' who posted that song a few days ago. Great tastes around here

Bows + Arrows may be The Walkmen's best work.

I go back and forth between this and Heaven.

Song for Leigh is incredible.

What a strange thread and strange comparison. Other than being from NYC they have nothing in common. The Strokes wrote catchy, pop, mainstream rock music. Interpol was doing the college, album rock thing.

It would be like comparing The Eagles and Yes in the 70s and wondering why Yes didn't have as much mainstream success.

In both instances, they're completely different, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for both.

Heaven is a great, more mature album.

My top two albums by The Walkmen are Bows + Arrows and Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone. They are 1a and 1b and can switch places with every listen.

I’ll personally take the Strokes, but I’ve heard much much more of their catalog than Interpol.

It's akin to comparing Pearl Jam and Nirvana....same city, same period, same 'scene'.

NYC in the early 00's turned out many bands like The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, The National, Fiery Furnaces, TV on the Radio, Animal Collective....sorry you weren't aware.

It's fascinating to me that people prefer Turn on the Bright Lights.

No songs as good as the three singles, and Antics has their two best songs, ever.

I'm aware of all those bands and the early 2000s NYC "scene" doesn't change the fact that The Strokes and Interpol have almost nothing in common musically.

Well there‘a an entire chapter in the Meet Me in the Bathroom book that came out a few years ago about how, in that initial moment at least, Indie music people were either Strokes fans or Interpol fans. There was even a rivalry of sorts between the bands. So you may be off here

That means nothing when posing the question of why one had more mainstream success than the other. One wrote catchy mainstream rock, the other did not. Again, that doesn't make one better than the other.

Interpol was so much better. I never understood the hype around The Strokes
