What’s your ideal setup for red snapper or can handle anything on the bottom? Looking not to break the bank so let’s just say $400.

Have been really enjoying mangrove fishing recently so figure why not move to the next step!

Thanks!

I use a penn fathom 25w for all my stuff up to 150' and I find it about perfect, other than it is a star drag. If you're fishing 300+ feet out of Venice you might want to go up to a 2 speed 50 wide with a lever drag.

You don't need anything very big for snapper fishing.

Your title says deep drop but your post says red snapper? Usually when someone says deep drop they are talking 500+ ft and more like 1000ish which is beyond red snapper depth for things like tile fish and yellow edge grouper.

I love my Avet MX on a Penn Rampage for snapper & smaller grouper but it may be a tad light if you bump into an AJ. If you want a lever drag and don’t want to pay for a gold reel, Penn Squall is an excellent choice.

I have a couple of Penn Spinfishers 6500 that do awesome, they have up to 30 lbs of drag. Had a young buck that was mad at the fish or didn't want to listen but he jigged up 5 amberjack in 450' of water on them with no problem. The spinning reels seem to be easier for the women and kids because the reel is turned down so they're not trying to fight it twisting in their hands. I also mangrove fish with these rods.

Penn Spinfisher 6500 ($160)
