Im sure this is a question that gets asked a fair bit but:

-Got a new TV a few months ago in preparation of the new console generation, settled on a Samsung TU7000 65’

-My laptop (that I’ve just used for basic stuff, no games outside management sims) is entering the end of its lifespan and I’m wondering if I should get a gaming laptop (no room for full set up at the moment), most likely the Dell G5 15, and use that as my “console” instead.

-I know PC gaming is better and modable. I mostly play sports games except for the odd AAA title (Cyberpunk 2077 will be on this list)

-If I get the gaming laptop can I run that through my tv and get a good experience? I know it probably won’t be exactly 4K but better than typical 1080p? Will the graphic quality improvements on the new consoles be replicated on PC?

I run my PC on my tv for a while, but the screen burn in is real. You can get a very good monitor for a coup hundred bucks that has a much better refresh rate than the tv. I'd do that for playing on your PC if you went that route.

Don’t really have the space for that at the moment, at least not the size monitor I would want. May just stick with consoles if that’s going to be a big issue

I just looked it up and the refresh rate on my Samsung is 120hz, is that not enough?

I never find that the TV route works nearly as well. But honestly just think through the games, the console games port to PC usually suck on PC. But there are some awesome PC games that could never work on console.

Main games I play are like FIFA or NBA 2k, which have pretty robust modding communities that people swear by, so not sure how much that would be a concern for me.

In the long term I would end up getting a ps5 eventually, but would probably wait a year or so and just play cyberpunk on my ps4

Two years ago I played PES on PS4 with updated option file (real team names, logos, kits, etc) but left everything else vanilla without mods for console. Last years version I played on laptop and modded the shite out of it. The gaming experience playing it that way on a laptop was FAR greater than playing it on console. I modded everything - added all real life stadiums for whatever league I was playing in, updated crowd chants, in game graphics, CPU logic for more realistic play, menus, advertisements within each stadium, etc... if it could be modded, I did it. It was AWESOME!

I assume Fifa has the same type of modding community. Once you play it once modded out, you'll never want to go back.

Modding issues with PES that I assume Fifa would have the same issues with: (1) anytime there was a major update for the game, a lot of mods would get wiped out and you have to wait a couple of days for the modding community to update the mods to make them compatible with the latest update. Then you have to go through each individual mod and reload them. Minor annoyance, but be prepared to put the game down for a few days if one of your favorite mods gets wiped out by an update. Although you can always roll back to previous version of the game before the update too if you backup your files. (2) If youre an online player, a lot of mods wont carry over into your online play against another user (I am strictly offline, so that didnt bother me).

A game like Cyberpunk will have a shite ton of mods out for it too not long after release. Honestly, the larger AAA games (specifically open world games like Skyrim and the other ES games, Witcher 3, GTA V, Fallout, etc...) have a larger modding community than the annual sports releases. I am running through Witcher 3 for the first time right now with some mods running for updated graphics and various game patches & fixes that apparently were very annoying in the vanilla version).

For a while now I have been streaming my games from my laptop to my apple tv using the SteamLink app.

It works pretty well as long as my laptop is hardwired in. If it is on wifi I have to turn down some settings.

I also like it because if I really want, I can just grab the ipad and play on there.

Refresh rate may not be the right term i'm looking for. If I remember correctly, the xbox at least, has some image scrubbing in it that helps prevent screen burn that the PC doesn't.

I have an LG B7 and once I built my PC and started using the tv as the monitor, I got screen burn within 6 months. I reguarly refreshed the pixels on the tv and everything.

I may be wrong here, but i believe using a TV for a pc monitor is much more likely to experience screen burn that running the console on it.

I have a couch gaming setup for my desktop PC. Lapdesks are cheap and easily fit a TKL keyboard

I haven't seen screen burn in in 10 years, wasn't even aware that was still a thing. Was your TV old or cheap?

Every tv I've owned has had a screen saver function

Buy something now, don't wait for Ampere.

I would love to see you waste money.

Are you asking if a Dell G5 15 will be able to perform as well as a PS5 or Series X?

Based on the specs I'm looking at I would say no...not even close.

Nope, LG B7 OLED. Played on it for over two years pretty regularly with my xbox with no screen burn issues. Ran the pixel refresher every couple of weeks and everything. Started playing my PC on it and very quickly got screen burn without changing anything else. The screen burn was from the game, just from playing. It wasn't from just leaving it on a home screen or anything while the tv was on.

I'm by no means ruling out user error in the scenario. Was just my experience with using a tv as a monitor for my PC to caution since the TV he got is definitely not cheap.

I've moved my PC to a 165hz monitor I got and couldn't be happier with it.

What’s the input lag on that tv relative to a gaming monitor? If you plan to play anything competitively, particularly FPS, you’ll be at a disadvantage on a tv.

Unless you “need” a laptop either go with the new console gen, or build a pc and play with a controller on the tv. A gaming laptop likely does none of the things well if you look at cost, performance, portability tradeoff compared to a console or dedicated gaming pc.

Edit: Took a look at the proposed laptop. A $900 gaming laptop with a 1660ti won’t get close to the new console performance. It would not be able to push 4K games reliably. The only thing you’re gaining is the ability to use mods.

Good players play well regardless of input delay

If input delay is the difference between winning and losing, you're not very good

Few things are as overrated in their inpact as input delay

I play on EU server on WoT, with 150-200 ping, on a tv with probably 50ms input delay, and with a wireless mouse and I have no problem playing well.

Yes a good player will still be good, but comparing like for like and they will be at a disadvantage. In a game like CoD for example, a 200-300 ms (input lag, refresh rate, ping, etc cumulative) delay and you’re already dead. If you put two equally skilled players with drastically differing equipment against each other the one using better equipment will win consistently more. Whether that matters to him based on competitiveness or game choice is up to him.
