Seriously? That’s dumb as shite.
We’d have to close a lot of things if we’re going to call it discriminatory against “bankless people.” Plus, it’s 2020, and prepaid cards have existed for over a decade. That isn’t even a valid complaint when there are easy ways to transfer cash into an electronic payment option.
NYC, along with other places like Philly and SF, made laws prohibiting businesses from going cashless. Here's a quote from a NYT piece.
quote:
“I worry about the real-world discriminatory effect that cashless business can have on New Yorkers, especially in communities of color,” Mr. Torres, a Bronx Democrat, said.
The prospect of the Council prohibiting businesses from refusing cash appeared to go over well with Maren Berthelsen and Lucia Burns, two friends who were having lunch on Thursday at Mulberry & Vine on Warren Street in Manhattan. A sign near the restaurant’s register informed customers that cash was not accepted, and neither woman was happy about it.
“I think it’s incredibly discriminatory not to accept cash because some people can’t get credit,” said Ms. Berthelsen, a teaching artist.
Ms. Burns, a program coordinator, agreed.
“It is exclusionary,” she said, “because people without means are less likely to have a credit card.”
These people are so fricking stupid that they don't know what a debit card is.

Easily corrected, a simple language barrier. Credik and Debik will correct the misunderstanding.

Sounds like they're saying black people are too stupid to use a bank or debit card.
Kinda racist if you ask me.

When was that article? I’d love to see a follow up with those people during covid where so many places are going cashless for health reasons.
Anyone can get a bank account in today’s world. They’re in every Walmart so you don’t have to go to no fancy branch. If not a bank account, you can buy a prepaid card at Walmart and reload it as much as you want.
It’s a bullshite excuse for which I can’t even rationalize a legit reason.

I haven't been inside a convenience store in years.

I think it was a couple years ago.
I've done some work for a few major retailers lately and it's really interesting to see who uses cash for everything these days. I really don't understand how people think there is some sort of major barrier to getting a bank account these days. It's kinda like being homeless. Most of them prefer it that way.

Boomers, drug dealers, and poor people?

Well I sure hope the computers are programmed to tell people to put their masks on.

Been to a couple Racetracks that have them already. So nice to not have to interrupt the real cashier during her speaker-phone phone call.

They are banned in MA, NJ and Philly.

Couche in French means "layer".
Couche-Tard would then correctly apply to the general population of Arkansas.

All I can think after reading this.

I could see them doing this in SF but there's no way this would end well in NOLA/BR.
