re: Why does fentanyl even exist

It’s a titratable yet powerful narcotic for pain control during surgical procedures without the nausea and itching of most IV narcotics. The other choices all have some side effects such as Demerol- seizures, Dilaudid- longer acting but not as precise in titrating to effect, Morphine sometimes causes chest wall rigidity and makes breathing seem difficult. All cause respiratory depression and can be particularly risky if a person has sleep apnea. Fentanyl not as long lasting so can send pt home or to hospital room without as much apnea risk.

I use it in my dental office sometimes for iv sedation patients. (Not me the crna does. And not for all just some. It depends on the length of the procedure I am doing). My wife just had a baby. Her epidural was bupivacaine and fentanyl. It has plenty of medical uses.

My mom was a nurse for 35 years and everytime she see's it on the news, she says that she must have given 1000's of doses of the stuff in the recovery room at the local hospital. It's diluted and they know the potency of it.

These people on the street don't and that's why it kills them. It's cheaper than heroin and smaller so they can mix some with BC powder (or whatever the hell they cut it with) and sell it as heroin. Junkies are junkies, even if they knew the dose they's still try to get as fricked up and as close to the line of death as possible. That's the whole point of being a junkie, always chasing an even diminishing high.

What's crazy is that I am active in the recovery community (for the record, I've never even seen heroin or fentanyl) but I know a lot of people that overdose and story is almost always the same. They sober up for a period, either rehab or jail usually, then when they get fricked up after a period of abstinence, the levels on the street have changed and/or their tolarance is gone and boom, dead as doorknob. Their 'friends' steal their heroin and leave or more often, they're by themselves because they are still in the hiding it stage again.

I’ve had it for sedation for upper GI endoscopies. It apparently has a lower incidence of nausea post-op, which is helpful when you’ve had a esophageal biopsy or procedure that could have some significant complications if you threw up afterward.

It’s used for time travel.

I just remember the anesthesiologist saying count down from 10.....“10...” and before I got to 9 the surgery was over.

You can tell someone who has never been in real "10" pain.

Both have their places medically. I knew a few OR happy meds nurses who ended up having a problem with fentanyl. They'd just put it in a vial and sniff it. They were only caught because of taking some of what they claimed were giving to patients in OR.
